The dreaded unlucky (or lucky!) day of Friday the 13th has come and gone, but some of you may have this feeling, this want to keep the spooky mood going. Here's 13 horror movies you could watch this week to rekindle the scary vibe.
1. "It Follows"
It is only fitting that the first movie on this list is 2015's "It Follows." A superb horror movie that also tackles the issue of our sexual society and its harmfulness, David Robert Mitchell serves up one of the most original horror movies this decade.
2. "Scream"
Looking for a touch of humor in your horror? Wes Craven's "Scream" is just screaming for you to watch it. Tackling and challenging the ideas of many horror tropes common throughout the genre, Craven gave birth to a horror icon, Ghostface.
3. "Oculus"
Looking for a psychological thriller that tests your perceptions? Mike Flanagan's "Oculus" is the one for you. Featuring a great performance by Karen Gillan, the apple scene will just be a gut-wrencher to watch.
4. "You're Next"
While it doesn't really distinguish itself from very many home-invasion movies, Adam Wingard's "You're Next" showed just how much someone is willing to do to survive. With a strong female lead in Sharni Vinson, you'll be cheering her on to dole out justice throughout the film.
5. "Alien"
Sci-fi horror/thriller really exploded following Ridley Scott's claustrophobic and pulse-raising "Alien". Introducing the world to the infamous Xenomorph and its destructive capabilities, "Alien" made us fear deep space once again.
6. "28 Days Later"
Danny Boyle's tale of infected grows into a large departure to the slow-walking, horde threatening zombies. They are ruthless, sprinting after you and doing everything possible to beat you down. "28 Days Later" sparked a revamp of zombie-related movies back in 2003, and still stands today as a fantastic watch.
7. "The Voices"
In need of another lighter toned horror movie? How about the unknown treasure Ryan Reynolds who led "The Voices." Does the mentally unstable Jerry listen to the voice of his cat, becoming a serial killer? Or does he follow the good conscience of his dog, continuing to be the model citizen he's worked so hard to become?
8. "It"
"We all float down here" rings Tim Curry's chilling voice as titular clown Pennywise in the TV movie adaptation of Stephen King's "It". Giving people a reason to once again fear clowns, "It" played close attention to its source material and therefore boomed. With a new take on the novel to come out next year, it makes the eerie performance from Curry that much more frightening.
9. "The Thing"
Another classic horror flick, John Carpenter's "The Thing" was a marvel when it premiered in 1982, and still serves as the blueprint for paranoia based horror films. With a sub par remake/prequel in 2011, it's best to go right back to the original and relieve the wonder.
10. "The Witch"
Robert Eggers debut film is a slow-burn, and not for everyone. The attention to detail and the periodic atmosphere is fantastic. With paranoia and immense fear of God that accompanied the period of the colonies and Quakers, this film is not only for history buffs, but also for horror lovers as well.
11. Rob Zombie's 'Halloween'
While John Carpenter's "Halloween" was amazing and spawned the icon of Michael Myers, Rob Zombie's "Halloween" built and improved upon the original. Exploring the early life of Michael Myers, Zombie revamps a classic film and delivers a fantastic film.
12. "Saw"
A movie that spawned six sequels, James Wan's "Saw" is a fantastic film. Serving as a resume for his later films that would comprise the likes of "Insidious" and "The Conjuring", that are fantastic films in their own right. Nothing compares to the final scene involving the hand saw. Wan has a vision and eye for film making, and it's definitely portrayed within "Saw".
13. "Friday the 13th"
Is there any other way to really keep the vibe of the superstitious day without watching the classic horror film that shares the name? Jason Voorhees and his machete are synonymous not only with every Friday that bears the date of 13, but with Halloween or any fright-inducing attraction.
