As you're reading this, I'm adjusting to my new life here on a college campus just like you. I've spent the summer gathering and packing, preparing to start this new chapter in my life. But now that it's actually here, I've filled my head with worry and doubt. So, I decided to compile a list of things that I know I'll constantly be reminding myself of.
My hope is that as you enjoy these last, exciting, few days of summer you gain a little big of encouragement (and wisdom) from these nuggets of advice. From a freshman to a freshman, in no particular order, are some things to keep in mind throughout your first year.
1. Call your mom. Call your dad. Call your grandparents.
2. Don't be afraid to make new friends!
3. But don't be discouraged if you don't stay close to your new friends all year long.
4. Use your meal plan.5. It's never too early for coffee.8 a.m.? Coffee. Noon? Coffee. 10:30? Coffee.
6. Introduce yourself to your professors. Shake their hands.
7. Learn to dress professionally.
Whether it's for a presentation or job interview -- this life skill is a staple.
8. Take advantage of campus resources.
9. Take a road trip every once in a while.
10. If you feel stupid in class, don't worry, you're not the only one.
11. Worried? Stressed? Sad? Scared? Dance it out.
12. Get a planner.
A planner, a calendar, whatever it may be -- get it and use it. It'll make your life SO much easier.
13. Check your email.
14. Learn to write thank you cards.
15. Actually study.
Get into the habit of studying, even when you feel like you don't need to -- don't put it off.
16. Hug your friends.
17. Go to bed at a decent time.
Netflix can wait. Social media can wait.
18. Set aside a t-shirt fund.
You'll thank me for this one.
19. Don't forget to smell the fresh air.
20. You're gonna be OK; I know it.
No matter how many times you convince yourself that you're not and that you should probably just pack up and move home -- trust me you're gonna be just fine. Find some peace in the fact you're not alone in that boat.
21. You're not alone.
22. Read your Bible.
23. Pray. Every single day.
We only get to do freshman year once. So don't waste your time worrying about what other people are going to think of you. The exciting thing about college is that we have the opportunity to be who we want to be whenever we want to be it. Let's cherish this exhilarating new year. Before we know it, we'll be sophomores.
