The “Freshman Spirit”

Never Give Up The Ghost

The “Freshman Spirit”

First day of freshman year, decked out in Baylor gear from head to toe, I was ready to represent my school. I bled green and gold from the moment my foot hit this campus. Not knowing or caring about what anyone else thought, I carried myself with the utmost school spirit.

As a junior, I now see that same fire in the eyes of the new freshman students. Each and every one of them is prepared to run the Baylor Line for the first game, stroll to class in Baylor attire and ready to throw up a “Sic ‘Em” if any one of their brothers (or sisters) decides to let out a roar and raise their bear claw into the air.

Upperclassmen are the ones who are admired on campus, but I feel like the disposition of our freshman brothers and sisters is more commendable. To wake up everyday so excited to attend a university with such an incredible student body is such a blessing.

What an expression of pride. An expression of dedication. An expression of loyalty. I remember that feeling. I still have that sensation burning inside of me.

I want to use that sense of passion for everything that I do, that “Freshman Spirit.” I want people to look at my love and joy in this life as an admirable trait I possess. At a new job, I want people to be inspired and excited that I am a part of their team. I want to lead people with a sense of direction and I want them to know that when they follow me, they are following a man of true conviction.

In my faith most importantly, I want this spirit to be found. I want to voice my love for Christ in everything that I do. I want people to be able to look at me and use me as an example of being a man that aims to be Christ-like. I want to be able to achieve this simple goal I’ve set for myself. It’s my life’s goal, a sort of motto that I have chosen to live by.

Lead the blind to see the light, show the fearful not to fright. Teach the deaf to hear the song, and help the weak become the strong.

I do not want to be content. I do not want to be "okay" with where I stand. I want to strive to be bigger, larger and have more of an impact on the lives of others. My desire is to show other people that this “Freshman Spirit” isn’t something that just disappears after freshman year. In fact, it grows more powerful through your college experience. It consumes you. It drives you to be the best and set a standard others hunger to meet. I hope my spirit is envied and others want to have the joy and thankfulness that I do in life. It is what makes me who I am and I am proud of that “Freshman Spirit” that still continues to persist inside of me!

For as long as I can remember, I have been listening to The Beatles. Every year, my mom would appropriately blast “Birthday” on anyone’s birthday. I knew all of the words to “Back In The U.S.S.R” by the time I was 5 (Even though I had no idea what or where the U.S.S.R was). I grew up with John, Paul, George, and Ringo instead Justin, JC, Joey, Chris and Lance (I had to google N*SYNC to remember their names). The highlight of my short life was Paul McCartney in concert twice. I’m not someone to “fangirl” but those days I fangirled hard. The music of The Beatles has gotten me through everything. Their songs have brought me more joy, peace, and comfort. I can listen to them in any situation and find what I need. Here are the best lyrics from The Beatles for every and any occasion.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.
