To my freshman/sophomore year roommate,
I was above and beyond nervous for college. I wouldn’t even say I was excited, just plain nervous. Other than living in a bunk at camp each summer with 15 other girls, I did not know what it was like to have a roommate. I knew it was going to be a new experience, but I wasn’t sure if I was going to actually enjoy it or not. But that’s too bad because I didn’t have a choice.
Anyway, in August of freshman year, we were on the same flight to school and that was only the third time we had met. I literally had nerves throughout my body, as I was about to embark on the biggest change I’ve experienced. Moving into our dorm as a freshman with 99% humidity was not nice to say the least. With our families completely on top of each other moving all of our ridiculous and unnecessary stuff into our small room was definitely a sight.
Once our families left, my nerves only grew bigger. Your parents left before mine and I came back to the room to see you sitting there alone and upset. I did not know you at all but I hugged you. Little did I know at the time, you don’t like affection and that was probably not the move, but it seemed right. Anyway, in the first week of school we didn’t hang out with each other much as we found ourselves in different groups of friends. Little did we know, that was the best decision for us.
As time went on, we began to learn more about each other and we would hang out just the two of us more and more. Although we were still just hanging out in the room laying in bed and watching Netflix, we would talk all night. Our friendship began to blossom.
Spring break rolled around and that meant it was time to figure out housing for the next year. Even though we have our differences (you’re “messy not dirty”), I knew I wanted to live with you again. I dreamed of a single room, but still being with you 24/7. I finally got myself to ask you about housing and it was something we just naturally agreed on. The best decision I made was deciding to live with you again as a sophomore.
During the summer we saw each other once or twice as you were going to camp where we really were not able to talk often. But then, August of sophomore year rolled around faster than we could even realize and we were back in NOLA moving in to our single-single dorm room.
As our dads sat repainting our chipped and rusty closets, I knew this was going to be our year. I can officially and definitively say that we have become best friends. I am not sure if it is because we have known each other for longer or what it really is, but we really grew as friends. Nothing makes me more upset than knowing that I will not be living with you next year. Cheesiness is annoying, but you have really always been there for me and I value that more than anything and more than you will ever know.
Coming back home at night to hang out with you and rehash our evenings out is something I will miss infinitely. You will forever be “roommate” and I will miss being with you 24/7. You were my most tear-jerking goodbye this semester, because we both realized it is the end of an era. That being said, nothing will change because we have such a unique relationship. I can confidently call you one of my best friends and nothing makes me happier than to have spent these last two life-changing years with you.
