You always hear about the "sophomore slump," but I'm having a freshman slump.
It was my second week of school this past week and it was not an enjoyable one.
I have a really hard time with life transitions, and I don't know about you, but I would say going from high school to college and not living at home all the time is a huge transition.
I feel like a lot of fellow freshmen might be feeling this way but don't want to talk about it, so I'm here giving my take on some of the issues I've faced within my first two weeks of being at school.
First of all, I would like to let you guys know that my therapist told me it will take at least 3 months minimum for you to completely feel like you are adjusted to something new. For me, it takes longer, but a minimum of 3 months can seem like forever.
Next, I want to talk about feeling lonely. This is a completely normal feeling when you are transitioning, and I bet you that you're not the only person feeling as alone as you feel. And it's okay to feel lonely and alone sometimes, it's just not okay when you completely isolate yourself because of the loneliness.Call your friends and family. Seriously, talk to your family. My relationship with my dad has improved within just these 2 weeks that I've been at school.
Having a lot of down-time is another thing that I've been faced with. I like to try and fill up my spare time by writing or doing some sort of art. Do something enjoyable with your spare time if you don't have homework to catch up on. Read, watch a movie, doodle, etc! JOIN CLUBS! I joined 3 clubs this past week and I can't wait for them to start. This is something that will take up some of your down-time once school gets rolling.
Just getting through a day can be hard sometimes. Chunking time is something that has been a great skill to get through the day. Taking things one step at a time will help you get through your day. Whether its class by class, hour by hour, or even minute by minute, chunking time is a great way to pass your day by. Also- finding something to look forward to every single day, every week, and every month helps keep you motivated.
My mood has been on and off, but finding things I love to do has helped me boost it up. Just listening to my favorite music or watching a Disney movie has really helped me get through some tough thoughts.
These are just a few of the major things I've been faced with the first two weeks of my freshman year at college. I hope some of these ideas have been helpful and you've been able to relate to them. Hopefully, they've given you some relief that you are not alone in feeling these things.
