The dreaded mention of FRESHMAN 15: you hear about it from your friends, parents and teachers. (Cue dramatic music.) So, what exactly is the Freshman 15? It is when you are given this enormous amount of freedom that for some can be quite overwhelming. With the unlimited meal plan, you can eat what you want, pretty much when you want. With that unlimited access to food, it can be a little dangerous. Some aren't careful about what they eat or eat too much, too often. With no limits it turns into Freshman 15!
Personally, the food wasn't that great my freshman year, so I actually lost weight, which is good. But it's only good when you actually want to try to lose it, not when the food is so bad you don't want to eat. For me, this year, my sophomore year I will most likely gain that dreaded 15, because the food is that darn good. The food is good when you can season it the way you choose, it's good when it's warm and it's supposed to be a warm dish, or when it's supposed to be cold dish and it's actually cold. It's good when you go back for more and you aren't complaining everyday about how awful the food is. Now it's wonderful!
Shout out to Dave, the new Director of Campus Food Services. He came from a different school up North and I am beyond blessed that he has started working at Wingate! Food has improved a thousand times over! The rice needs a little work FYI but now the food is quite edible and I enjoy going to the cafeteria and eating (and I mean eating all of it plus another plate) vs. last year when I only wanted like half because it was not appetizing at all. Dave, you rock, you and the kitchen staff are amazing!
Freshman 15 may happen for the incoming freshmen just due to the fact that they can eat good food on demand when they want. if you know already that you are going to be one of those that just can't help making use of the unlimited food, it is important to make a work out schedule, go to fitness events, watch what you eat and try not to overdo it. But it isn't always the freshmen that gain those extra few good-food-loving pounds that face the troubling "15."
For the non-freshmen that can already feel the effects of having the cafeteria open and you no longer have to wait for the more healthy home cooked meals, that wait time was the only thing keeping you from chowing down on that food the second its done; cause if you ate it as soon as it was done you'd burn yourself or your mom told you to "hey wait for everyone else before you eat."
