#FreeKesha may become a reality.
Pop music artist, Kesha Rose Sebert, formerly known as Ke$ha, has been involved in an ongoing legal battle with Sony Music.
For the past few years she has been recording with Sony Music Record Label under Lukasz "Dr. Luke" Gottwald, a recording artist. Allegedly, since Dr. Luke has been working with the artist, he has been emotionally and sexually abusing her.
In a court case on February 19, Kesha was denied a break in her contract with Sony Music. While they proposed she could switch recording artist to someone else under the Sony label, Kesha is legally unable to leave the label itself.
While in court, Judge Shirley Kornreich denied Kesha to leave her contract because "there has been no showing of irreparable harm," and because "she was being given the opportunity to record." It's incredibly sad that someone has to show evidence of being irreparably harmed to be not only believed but legally allowed to break a contract with someone who abused them.
After Kesha's heartbreaking trail on February 19, she released a video via Twitter thanking her friends and fans for their support and for helping her get through these hard times. Many artist have voiced their support for Kesha, male and female alike. Celebrities such as Lady Gaga, Ariana Grande, Demi Lovato and Adam Lambert have posted quite frequently on social media with their support for Kesha. The support varies from praying for her in these tough times, to encouraging Sony to drop Dr. Luke or spreading the hashtag #SonySupportsRape and #FreeKesha.
Due to celebrities and fans of Keshas rallying together, they are providing a helping hand in getting word out about Sony and Dr. Luke's injustice toward Kesha. After all of the buzz on social media from the hashtag #SonySupportsRape and #FreeKesha it may actually become a reality that Dr. Luke leaves Sony Music.
According to an article on Nylon.com on March 9, Sony intents to discard of Dr. Luke as soon as they can. His contract will reportedly be cut short with only a year left on it. The summary of the article is that even though Sony Music does not want it to come to losing Dr. Luke, they cannot afford to be called unsupportive. However, Sony Music's lawyer says that no one's contract can be legally broken and it is ultimately up to Dr. Luke to terminate his working relationship with Kesha.

Here are a few words that Kesha has said recently about her prolonged legal turmoil with Dr. Luke. Here she states how she is humbly pleading for a safe work environment to continue her career and follow her dreams as well as provide a positive role model for anyone else who has been sexually abused, so they know they have the power to speak out.
“All I ever wanted was to be able to make music without being afraid, scared, or abused. This case has never been about a renegotiation of my record contract – it was never about getting a bigger, or a better deal. This is about being free from my abuser. I would be willing to work with Sony if they do the right thing and break all ties that bind me to my abuser.
But at this point, this issue is bigger than just about me.
I think about young girls today – I don’t want my future daughter – or your daughter – or any person to be afraid that they will be punished if they speak out about being abused, especially if their abuser is in a position of power.
Unfortunately, I don’t think that my case is giving people who have been abused confidence that they can speak out, and that’s a problem.”
