Why We Should #FreeKesha

I saw Kesha at my local country fair a few years ago. At the time, she seemed energetic and acted like she was having the time of her life. It’s funny what a smile can hide. The famous singer of the throwback song "Tick Tock" and "Timber" is in trouble. She has been out of the music scene for quite some time but has come back with a controversy.

Allegedly, the man who produced her music, Dr. Luke, has trapped her in a record deal. He is an experienced producer who has worked with other well-known talent such as Katy Perry and One Direction. She was signed to work with him when she was 18 years old. It gets worse, though. Not only has he trapped her into not letting her work with another record company; he supposedly sexually assaulted her. He also allegedly drugged her on one occasion.

Kesha and Dr. Luke are taking a break from an exhausting legal battle. Dr. Luke’s defense is that she not only signed a contract and that she is trying to take his money. Sony called her claims a, “transparent and misguided attempt to renegotiate her contracts.” Meanwhile, Kesha is just trying to get free.

The hashtag #FreeKesha went viral over the last week because the Internet has heard about Kesha’s problem. Whether or not it is true, Kesha needs to be freed from the contract. The accusations that she has made are serious, and Sony needs to be taking her seriously. Her music career is on the line, and it’s not fair that she has to sacrifice her singing because she isn’t allowed to escape. Currently, she is not allowed to express her musical creativity, which is experimenting with different musical genres and her artistry. She should not have to be forced to only focus on one type of genre, even if it’s the music that sells the records. Also, she is being put in a situation in which she doesn’t feel safe. Safety above everything else in this world is most important. Nobody should have be put into a situation in which they are not comfortable.

My question is why isn’t Kesha’s word enough? Very rarely does a person lie about being sexually assaulted. Kesha’s case is hardly being talked about, let alone brought into the media. This is an issue that needs to be talked about because all over the world sexual abuse is a problem that has impacted millions of people. I was taught in a sexual assault course I had to take before attending college that when a person comes to you and says that something has occurred to them, the first thing you are supposed to say is, “I believe you.” Why aren’t more people saying that to Kesha?

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

These powerful lyrics remind us how much good is inside each of us and that sometimes we are too blinded by our imperfections to see the other side of the coin, to see all of that good.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

The song was sent to me late in the middle of the night. I was still awake enough to plug in my headphones and listen to it immediately. I always did this when my best friend sent me songs, never wasting a moment. She had sent a message with this one too, telling me it reminded her so much of both of us and what we have each been through in the past couple of months.

Zodiac wheel with signs and symbols surrounding a central sun against a starry sky.

What's your sign? It's one of the first questions some of us are asked when approached by someone in a bar, at a party or even when having lunch with some of our friends. Astrology, for centuries, has been one of the largest phenomenons out there. There's a reason why many magazines and newspapers have a horoscope page, and there's also a reason why almost every bookstore or library has a section dedicated completely to astrology. Many of us could just be curious about why some of us act differently than others and whom we will get along with best, and others may just want to see if their sign does, in fact, match their personality.

Being a good person does not depend on your religion or status in life, your race or skin color, political views or culture. It depends on how good you treat others.

We are all born to do something great. Whether that be to grow up and become a doctor and save the lives of thousands of people, run a marathon, win the Noble Peace Prize, or be the greatest mother or father for your own future children one day. Regardless, we are all born with a purpose. But in between birth and death lies a path that life paves for us; a path that we must fill with something that gives our lives meaning.
