Free Spirit Advice for My Sisters

Dear Munchkins,

As you grow older and enter the world we call “adulthood," you will realize that life is not as easy as you thought. We all want the nice clothes and big house, but there is so much more. I want you to remember these things as you move forward with your lives.

Never conform.

It is always easy to do what others tell you, to just take the easy route. You will hate it if that isn’t what you want to do. Think outside of the box no matter what you choose to do. Whether you go to college right away, take a year off, or don't even go at all. Make sure you pick what you love, and do it well. Who cares if people think you're strange or a little out of the ordinary?

Always smile.

Most things in life are temporary. Even your happiness will fade sometimes, but never let it go. Treat people nicely. Be kind to yourself. Most of all, never let any hardship make you give up on happiness. Also, you're beautiful, so stop telling yourself otherwise.

Be kind.

It is always easier to be mean than it is to be kind. Most people do not want to be bothered, because they are so caught up with their hectic lives and “success” to appreciate the beauty around them. Everyone deserves your respect and kindness no matter of their status or occupation. Everyone is struggling inside and your kind actions or words could actually better a stranger's perception of life. Also, be kind to the people who are mean to you because they need it the most.

Be creative.

Find a hobby, and never let it go. Express yourself. Let it be your outlet. Life is going to get hard, but having a way to deal with it in a positive way is going to improve your way of looking at life. The most successful people in this world took the path less traveled.

Wear your heart on your sleeve.

This is the hardest thing to do. People will break your heart, do things you never thought they would, and even make you feel worthless. Cry it out, and then pick yourself up and keep on going. Every time you fall in love, let it become that powerful love that will break your heart. Life will be a lot more exciting if you aren't scared of falling in love. Never punish others for someone else’s doing (though it is good to learn from your mistakes).

Do not be a doormat.

Be kind, but have ideals, and uphold them. Be open-minded about different cultures and beliefs, but never let someone make you feel like your opinions are less because they do not align with theirs. Life is full of different surprises. Take the time to learn about others but also know yourself. If you have weird interest, embrace them. For example, I have a strange obsession with KPOP and learning German.

In the end, I have so much to say to you guys, but for now this will do. You guys are entering a precious time in your life. Watching you grow is amazing, but in the end remember to do what makes YOU happy. We will support you no matter what you choose, even if we disagree. Explore what this world has to offer you besides a fancy house and clothes.

Don’t just live for money, but live for yourself.

For as long as I can remember, I have been listening to The Beatles. Every year, my mom would appropriately blast “Birthday” on anyone’s birthday. I knew all of the words to “Back In The U.S.S.R” by the time I was 5 (Even though I had no idea what or where the U.S.S.R was). I grew up with John, Paul, George, and Ringo instead Justin, JC, Joey, Chris and Lance (I had to google N*SYNC to remember their names). The highlight of my short life was Paul McCartney in concert twice. I’m not someone to “fangirl” but those days I fangirled hard. The music of The Beatles has gotten me through everything. Their songs have brought me more joy, peace, and comfort. I can listen to them in any situation and find what I need. Here are the best lyrics from The Beatles for every and any occasion.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.
