Free Fun In Santa Barbara

A few favorites of a city girl loving her non-city life.

Growing up in Dubai, city life was almost all I knew. The way we had fun was by going out to clubs, bars, restaurants, malls... Almost everything I did back home required spending money.

Thus, moving here to Santa Barbara has given me an entirely new experience when it comes to having fun, without spending money, and I think that is an invaluable experience.

The biggest reason this is possible is because of the abundance of nature here. Instead of skyscrapers, there's palm trees that tower over me. Instead of highways, there's winding bike paths. Instead of sitting in a car staring down at our phones or the other automobiles passing by, our feet (or bikes) take us almost anywhere we need to go.

As my first year here comes to an end, I want to reminisce on some of the best memories I've had in which no money was spent.

1. Running Along The Beach

When I think of my first few months here, the sceneries I've run amongst stands out. I had an extremely difficult time adjusting to my new life, and running in the beauty here significantly improved my happiness and appreciation for where I was.

My first running route was up in the cliffs next to Campus Point; the view of the ocean from up there was breathtaking (I probably took more time taking pictures than I did running). I took a break from the cliffs to run along the beach shore, and eventually (my current routine) I began running to the pier, which combines the scenery of the beach and the cliffs.

Every time I run here, I remember how fortunate I am to go to school here. True happiness without any money spent.

2. Knapp's Castle

Knapp's Castle is on all those online lists of the top things to do in Santa Barbara (I assure you, you could easily find one here on Odyssey). I see why; the entire experience was magical. The journey there itself up the windy road in the mountains with my two friends blasting music was fun in itself. Walking from the car to the castle was beautiful due to the view below us and the evident silence. And, of course, the view from the castle was out of this world -- really though, it was heaven-like due to the cotton candy clouds and the colorful streaks across the sky.

A free adventure -- just make sure you have a friend with a car full of gas...

3. The Beach

Obviously. Going for a walk, a run like I said earlier, tanning, meditating, yoga, reading, writing an article... Literally anything is enjoyable on the beach.

So yeah, this speaks for itself.

4. Jumping Off The Pier

One of my utmost favorite memories so far here is the night (technically morning since it was at five a.m.) I jumped off the pier. After a night biking far out with two friends and exploring a place in the cliffs, we got pizza, went back to the dorms and decided at five in the morning to go jump off the pier. And that's exactly what we did. The water was freezing but we barely noticed as we dried off and shoved ourselves into our warm hoodies and sweatpants, called it a night and went to bed as the sun rose.

Again, jumping off the pier is also another to-do you'll find on the bucket lists. One of my best nights here was completely free.

That's just a few favorites of a city girl loving her non-city life.

For as long as I can remember, I have been listening to The Beatles. Every year, my mom would appropriately blast “Birthday” on anyone’s birthday. I knew all of the words to “Back In The U.S.S.R” by the time I was 5 (Even though I had no idea what or where the U.S.S.R was). I grew up with John, Paul, George, and Ringo instead Justin, JC, Joey, Chris and Lance (I had to google N*SYNC to remember their names). The highlight of my short life was Paul McCartney in concert twice. I’m not someone to “fangirl” but those days I fangirled hard. The music of The Beatles has gotten me through everything. Their songs have brought me more joy, peace, and comfort. I can listen to them in any situation and find what I need. Here are the best lyrics from The Beatles for every and any occasion.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.
