Student loans are the one debt that will not disappear under any circumstance. If a person is to die before they pay off their student loans, a family member inherits those debts. College is almost un-affordable now because of the increasing rate of tuition across the country, so student loans are a must.
The presidential elections are especially important for millennials and younger generations this time around. Debates have struck up at colleges and universities countrywide. Of course, social media has also had its fair share of impromptu debates. One of the most debated topics is that of whether college should be free.
Society today makes college seem like an American right. Everyone deserves to go, therefore everyone should have the opportunity to do so. However, it is not a necessity, it is a luxury. There have been statements made such as, "High school is available to everyone, so why not college?" College is only for those who truly are passionate and want to work hard to achieve their goal at hand.
College is challenging starting at the application process. Numerous essays and questions make for a time consuming task, and that is only the tip of the iceberg. As a current college student, I worked hard all through grade school to get into a great high school and then worked even harder in high school to get into a good university. I never thought I deserved to go to college just because I was born in the USA. No one deserves an education and a career served up on a platter and handed to them. With enrollment to college comes adult responsibilities. No one is treated specially because the work is too much.
As a child of a parent that did not go to college, I learned that work ethic will get anyone farther than anything else. My parents worked, and continue to work, very hard so my siblings and I could have a great career. All these people that say it is impossible to live without a college degree are simply bending the truth. It is hard to be financially successful in any aspect, but hard work is the common denominator. A college degree may get one a job, but hard work is the trait that will allow one to keep said job.
Yes, as a starving student I sometimes wish college were free, but that's why there are so many scholarship opportunities. People in their late twenties and younger believe they are entitled to so much, and it is this trait that taints society's image of millennials. No one is entitled to anything.
If college becomes free and easily available, those who truly worked hard before this idea was even brought up are stuck with thousands of dollars of debt and others who went just because they could are student loan debt free. This idea is taking away the meaning and sense of success of college. When I received my acceptance letter, and financial aid packet, I was so proud. Usually the amount of financial aid reflects on grades, so when I saw my scholarships from universities I had the strongest sense of accomplishment I've ever had. Making college free would take away that awarding feeling.
