A word I can’t seem to

Understand

Free…

Free.

A word that always felt impossible to understand.

For most of my life, I felt trapped—surrounded by walls taller than I could ever climb.

Trapped in my home.

Trapped in my emotions.

Trapped inside my own room.

The world kept spinning, but I never seemed to move with it.

Instead, I dreamed.

I dreamed of endless open spaces. Of the sound of hooves thundering across wide-open plains as a summer storm rolled over the horizon.

Like a memory I couldn’t quite reach…

A feeling.

A whisper.

Freedom.

Every morning I’d get up, walk into the bathroom, and stare at the girl in the mirror.

Who are you?

What do you want?

And then it would come back.

The green fields.

Wildflowers dancing in the wind.

A mountain stream rushing over smooth stones.

The scent of freshly cut hay mixed with dandelions.

For just a moment, I could almost feel it.

Then reality would pull me back.

I’m sitting in my room.

An open sketchbook lies on the bed.

Taylor Swift plays softly somewhere in the background.

I pick up my phone.

No messages.

I toss it back onto the bed.

“I hate it here.”

So I close my eyes.

Back to dreamland.

I’m standing in mist-covered mountains as the morning sun creeps over the tall birch trees. A faint silhouette appears in the distance.

I reach out my hand.

I can almost feel the warmth of her breath.

Then…

I wake up.

“Here I am again.”

Back in this bed.

Back inside these walls.

The smell of last night’s campfire still clings to my clothes, reminding me that somehow my dreams feel more real than my reality.

Because I didn’t know what freedom was.

I only knew what it felt like to be trapped.

Wake up.

Get out.

Run free.

Run free.

That’s all I’ve ever wanted.

To run free.

So I drift back into the place that keeps calling me.

The same mountains.

The same meadow.

The same feeling I could never explain.

Why do you keep calling me?

Then I see her again.

The dark silhouette takes form.

In the clearing stands a gray Mustang…

Almost the color of the Moon.

There you are.

Beautiful.

Strong.

Graceful.

Free.

I see you.

I feel you.

And then I wake up.

But this time…

I’m not dreaming anymore.

You’re here.

My Moon.

My mirror.

My freedom.

And I love you.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

These powerful lyrics remind us how much good is inside each of us and that sometimes we are too blinded by our imperfections to see the other side of the coin, to see all of that good.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

The song was sent to me late in the middle of the night. I was still awake enough to plug in my headphones and listen to it immediately. I always did this when my best friend sent me songs, never wasting a moment. She had sent a message with this one too, telling me it reminded her so much of both of us and what we have each been through in the past couple of months.

Zodiac wheel with signs and symbols surrounding a central sun against a starry sky.

What's your sign? It's one of the first questions some of us are asked when approached by someone in a bar, at a party or even when having lunch with some of our friends. Astrology, for centuries, has been one of the largest phenomenons out there. There's a reason why many magazines and newspapers have a horoscope page, and there's also a reason why almost every bookstore or library has a section dedicated completely to astrology. Many of us could just be curious about why some of us act differently than others and whom we will get along with best, and others may just want to see if their sign does, in fact, match their personality.

Being a good person does not depend on your religion or status in life, your race or skin color, political views or culture. It depends on how good you treat others.

We are all born to do something great. Whether that be to grow up and become a doctor and save the lives of thousands of people, run a marathon, win the Noble Peace Prize, or be the greatest mother or father for your own future children one day. Regardless, we are all born with a purpose. But in between birth and death lies a path that life paves for us; a path that we must fill with something that gives our lives meaning.
