Fraternity Bid Night: A Girl’s Timeline That Most Guys Don’t Know Exists

What Guys See: A night filled of drunken debauchery with their new brothers. Little to no preparation needed.

What Girls See: The best way to spend the first Thursday night of the semester. This night usually takes a little bit of preparation.

At WKU, among other places, fraternity bid night can be a rather big deal among the Greek community. For the guys, it makes a statement to their new members and the rest of campus how the rest of the semester will be. For the girls, it’s the best way to kick off the new semester. We pull out our newest outfits to make a good impression and let people know that this is our year. We are ready to have a good time with our sisters and friends.

The Timeline:

(It really begins on girl’s bid day when the new members find out about this tradition and the anticipation builds)

Thursday of Bid Day:

9:00 AM: Wake up with your alarm labeled “BOYS BID DAY!!!!!!!!” followed with appropriate emojis.

10:00 AM – 1 PM: You struggle to beat boredom through your classes. Thank goodness for Pinterest and the fact that it’s still syllabus week.

1:30 PM: Lunch date with your friends and their bid day buddies to plan the night’s festivities.

2:00 PM: The GroupMe explodes with questions of “What is everyone wearing?!” and “Where exactly is everyone going tonight?”

3:00 PM: Take a hard earned nap because who knows what the night ahead holds and what time you will make your way back to bed.

5:00 PM: Dinner time. Gather your roommates and make a quick run to your favorite spot.

6:00 PM: Actually start to get ready. Curly or Straight hair? Up or down? What color eyeshadow? Should I do a smoky eye? WHY DOES THIS GET SO COMPLICATED??

7:00 PM: You picked out your outfit over the summer when you saw the perfect dress online you just had to have. You are now rethinking this choice 7 times. You have asked your entire fam, your pledge class GroupMe, and every single person in the house. You don’t even wear the original outfit.

8:30 PM: Head to your sisters only pre-party. You float around the party talking to all your sisters about who’s party will be best, what order you’re hitting the parties, and catching up on gossip.

11:00 PM: You find yourself in the packed kitchen singing (screaming really) to Shania Twain’s “Any Man of Mine” and patiently awaiting the midnight go ahead.

12:00 AM: Midnight hits and your pre-party’s back door flings open, you grab your army of friends and off you go to your first fraternity - not quite your favorite, but still a great option.

12:30 AM or 1 AM maybe, who knows..: You’ve been around the block, caught up with the boys, and it’s time to go to your favorite house. You saved the best for last. You stroll in and start making the rounds. You check out the new boys, say hello to old friends, and run into your sisters and immediately start a dance party in the middle of the sticky living room floor. You play a few games of flip cup or beer pong and continue to celebrate the first Thursday of the year.

2:30 AM: You’ve managed to walk home hand in hand with your sisters and you decide you’re hungry. You change into your PJ’s and call for a pizza. They say it’ll be about 30 minutes. You call back 5 minutes later and tell them to leave it on the porch because you’ll be fast asleep before they get there.

The next day: Congrats! You survived the first Thursday night! You wake up and discover the pizza you completely forgot about placed in your kitchen half eaten by other girls. You text the group with a “You’re welcome” message and crawl back into bed. It’s not time to see the light of day yet. Once you finally pull yourself out of bed, you meet friends for lunch to recap and piece together the kind of Thursday night you only get once a semester.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

These powerful lyrics remind us how much good is inside each of us and that sometimes we are too blinded by our imperfections to see the other side of the coin, to see all of that good.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

The song was sent to me late in the middle of the night. I was still awake enough to plug in my headphones and listen to it immediately. I always did this when my best friend sent me songs, never wasting a moment. She had sent a message with this one too, telling me it reminded her so much of both of us and what we have each been through in the past couple of months.

Zodiac wheel with signs and symbols surrounding a central sun against a starry sky.

What's your sign? It's one of the first questions some of us are asked when approached by someone in a bar, at a party or even when having lunch with some of our friends. Astrology, for centuries, has been one of the largest phenomenons out there. There's a reason why many magazines and newspapers have a horoscope page, and there's also a reason why almost every bookstore or library has a section dedicated completely to astrology. Many of us could just be curious about why some of us act differently than others and whom we will get along with best, and others may just want to see if their sign does, in fact, match their personality.

Being a good person does not depend on your religion or status in life, your race or skin color, political views or culture. It depends on how good you treat others.

We are all born to do something great. Whether that be to grow up and become a doctor and save the lives of thousands of people, run a marathon, win the Noble Peace Prize, or be the greatest mother or father for your own future children one day. Regardless, we are all born with a purpose. But in between birth and death lies a path that life paves for us; a path that we must fill with something that gives our lives meaning.
