Frank Ocean had us waiting for four years. nearly half a decade!
The last album Frank Ocean dropped was "Channel Orange" on July 10, 2012. After The New York Times confirmed his new album "Boys Don't Cry" would drop on August 5, 2016 , we waited patiently, but nothing dropped, and we were all left disappointed, once again. Frank is unfortunately known to disappoint, being that many of us were concerned he dropped off the face of the planet the last year or two, or even wondered if he had finished making music for good. But the time has come, and Frank Ocean dropped not one, but TWO albums this past weekend. On Friday, August 19th, 2016, he dropped his debut visual album "Endless", a 45 minute video with loads of his new music playing in the background, mixed in with audio clips of him sawing and drilling, and the video you watch is of Ocean building a spiral staircase. You have to have an Apple Music subscription to view the video, but I've heard clips of the audio from "Endless", and let me tell you...there is a reason Frank Ocean is so coveted.
On Frank Ocean's website, boysdontcry.co, he released a photo saying "“I got two versions. I got twoooo versions.” #ISSUE1 #ALBUM3 #JULY2015 #BOYSDONTCRY"
So he teased us, with the thought that his album would be called "Boys Don't Cry", however fans were all too suspicious after the release of "Endless", due to the fact that Frank Ocean said that he has two versions, meaning that "Endless" was not the only thing he had us waiting four years for.
I'm thrilled to say that Frank came through; late in the evening of Saturday, August 20th, 2016, he dropped ANOTHER album titled "Blonde". I find it amusing yet confusing all in one sense, because Apple has the album titled "Blonde", but his album cover says "Blond".
But let me tell you, this album definitely makes up for the four years of waiting all of us Frank Ocean fans have had to do. Some tracks such as "Pink + White" (my personal favorite at the moment), "Ivy", and "Solo" have a classic Frank Ocean sound, similar to what you would find on "Channel Orange". Both songs are phenomenal, and really emulate that timeless sound and vibe he creates in his music. As always, there are some tracks that are all speaking, such as "Be Yourself" and "Facebook Story". Both tracks are funny to listen to and spice up the album with some humor. Some jokes have been made that the song "Nikes" sound like Frank used the Bee filter on Snapchat to record the song, because the audio in this song is higher pitched and has an edgier sound, that actually does sound quite a lot like the bee snapchat filter was used. But that aside, the song is amazing and full of a lot of meaning. Frank did switch it up a bit by adding a more acoustic sounding song, "Self Control".The combination of the vocals and the acoustic guitar in the song exceeds all expectations.
And we all couldn't help but laugh at the fact that he was too busy napping to announce that he dropped the album. #classicfrank am I right? But I will say the 17 tracks on this album (the digital version) are MOST DEFINITELY worth the $10 it costs on iTunes. And a forewarning, all the tracks on iTunes are "Album Only", which is actually a great thing, because you'll want to hear every single part of this album, not just bits and pieces.
So all we can say now to Frank is a massive THANK YOU! The wait was long, but well worth it, because both the visual album "Endless" and his Sophomore album "Blonde" are fantastic works of art. Bravo, Frank, Bravo! But the real question is, when do you think Frank Ocean will release his next album? Another four years, in 2020? Maybe longer? Only time will tell.
