Success has been on the rise for Foxing, since the beautiful bomb that is their first album, The Albatross, dropped in November of 2013. It shook the alternative community in the best conceivable way. Their records were devoured over the following months, sprouting a demand for six different vinyl pressings. They’ve since signed with Triple Crown Records and toured almost non-stop with names like Brand-New and Modern Baseball, even experiencing the theft of their entire trailer of gear and managing to get back on their feet with help of friends and fans. We welcomed Foxing’s supreme sophomore album, Dealer, this past fall.
Active since 2011, their career is moving faster than ever before and isn’t showing a single sign of slowing down just yet.
Just two nights before their Michigan date, at Subterranean in Chicago, frontman Conor Murphy managed to have his nose broken by an attendee. The attendee was said to have been crowd surfing and rapidly throwing punches when she struck Murphy. It’s unclear whether the attack was intentional or the product of a reckless accident. According to Fisher Rasmussen, an advertising student and friend who vacationed in Chicago for spring break, Murphy spent the majority of the show toggling between his microphone and a towel to soak up massive streams of blood.
In Ferndale, MI, at The Loving Touch, they christened their set with “The Medic,” arguably Foxing’s most loved song. Virtually the entire crowd howled along, fervently slinging their hands toward the stage. Touring violinist Emma Tiemann’s melodies were like the sprinkle of sugar and the cherry on top.

Alluding to the events that took place in Chicago, Murphy encouraged fans to stay calm, “no matter what happens, ...no matter how happy you may be…”
Midway through the set, he took a moment to address his condition: “Last night, my nose got broken during this song. Please don’t break my nose again tonight!” The six-piece group then plowed through “Bit By A Dead Bee Pt I,” triggering a heated mosh pit and more participation from fans still, following Murphy’s stellar vocals.
Below: Tancred, the solo project of Jess Abbott, formerly of Now, Now, would be the standout of the night’s three openers. Her new album, Out Of The Garden, drops on April first with Polyvinyl Records.
Foxing is a true entertainer, keeping the crowd’s attention and fostering emotion throughout the entirety of their set. Phone use was at a true minimum, aside from the occasional snapshot or short clip, likely for a keepsake. We’d love to take the whole band home with us! If only.
Their new live visuals for this tour included a colorful archive of clips probing our familiarly overpopulated world; but I’ll skip any further spoilers.
