Anyone who knows me knows that the 4th of July is my favorite holiday ever. Nothing can compare to the patriotism, parades, parties or post-dusk fireworks. Every year I look forward to these things, and every year I am shocked by the number of people who fail to appreciate and take part in the best things the 4th of July has to offer. So this year I decided to fix that by making my own list of musts for this fourth.
1. Wearing red, white and blue
Like on St. Patrick's Day there is a dress code for celebrating the 4th of July. It is treasonous not to wear red, white and blue on this special day. While it is not necessary to wear all three colors a minimum of two is in place. Honestly it's not that hard considering all jeans are blue. It's possible to enjoy the day without wearing red, white and blue, but everything is 100 times better if you do wear red, white and blue because it makes you feel like you are a part of something bigger than you.
2. Eating stereotypical barbecue food
Since the 4th of July is the embodiment of the good ole US of A it is necessary to eat the food associated with it. This means all backyard parties should be serving burgers, hot dogs, baked beans, coleslaw, potato chips, watermelon and jello. While you can feel free to add your own twist to this menu, you have to include part of it. If you go all day without eating any of these foods then you can't call yourself an American. Sorry it's just a fact.
3. Watching fireworks
There is only one day in the entire year where it is guaranteed that you can see fireworks for free. That day is the 4th of July. Every town, city and village big or small has their very own fireworks show going on. Fireworks are the icing on the cake to an already perfect day. There is no better way to celebrate our independence than with fireworks lighting up the sky.
4. Spending the day surrounded by friends and family
This is the most important part of the 4th of July. The real reason why the fourth has been my favorite holiday for so long is because I get to spend it surrounded by people who I love. Each year brings new memories and new people into the mix. The 4th of July is an excuse to spend the whole day with these people and I suggest that you take advantage of the opportunity. There are no expectations of fancy dinners or presents like on other major holidays. The 4th of July is all about being laid back and celebrating, allowing you to truly enjoy the company of your friends and family. However you choose to spend this fourth make sure you do it with the people you love.
