Myth 1: Obama, and liberals in general, want to take guns away.
False. That would be a violation of the second amendment, which we “liberals” respect too. We just want to not legally sell guns to people with a criminal record. We want to do research on guns and gun violence in order to make improvements in technology and general knowledge to increase safety. This isn’t all about criminals with guns and mass shootings. It’s about accidents too. We haven’t banned cars because they cause accidents, but we have worked to make cars and highways safer -- not to give lenience to people who could potentially be dangerous on the road. Why is it a violation of the second amendment to make these same accommodations for guns? Why are we not allowed to research gun violence in this country? I don’t know why people think that we shouldn’t make things safer, but the general idea that the liberals are trying to take away guns from law abiding, responsible citizens for purpose of hunting or protecting their family is wrong.
Myth 2: What stops bad guys with guns? Good guys with guns.
First off, no one is telling the good guys not to have guns. Second, who is going to take a gun with them to a night out at the club? Or a movie theater? No one. Also, a small pistol will probably not stop a guy with an assault rifle. Unless you plan on carrying a gun with you when you run to the grocery store, pharmacy, or for a nice dinner with your parents, please stop using this excuse.
Myth 3: The second amendment bans any regulation on guns.
I don’t think that’s what it means. I think it means we can’t just ban guns from the country. I don’t think it says anything about regulating gun purchases. The constitution is confusing, that is why we have a whole branch of government to interpret it. Also, the constitution was written a long time ago, and we need to let it grow with our country. It needs to make sense in the modern world.
Myth 4: Gun regulation won’t stop anything. Bad guys will always get guns.
True, criminals with guns will probably find guns, but why should we make it easy for them? If you fight this argument with, “well good guys need guns if bad guys will get guns anyway” please go back to myth number one.
Just think about the lives at steak instead of your pride for a second. As long as you are a safe, good, responsible person, you can keep your gun. Please, let’s never again sell a gun to someone investigated multiple times for terrorist activity.Like Hillary said, whether you like her or not, “if you're too dangerous to get on a plane, you're too dangerous to buy a gun."
