Nothing says summer like a Kenny Chesney song. His music fits right in with tan lines and tailgates, his style is one of good ole boy charm and island ease. It's as if Jimmy Buffet and Dolly Parton had a son -- a little rock and little reggae, country fried and served with a pina colada. But there's more to him than "She Thinks My Tractor's Sexy" and "No Shoes, No Shirt, No Problems." While I do appreciate a good farmer's tan and know every word of these tunes by heart, they barely even scrape the surface of Chesney as an artist and a person. Here are four songs you should definitely give a listen, whether you're not very familiar with his music or you cried when he came on stage that 4th of July when you were 17 (I may or may not be speaking from experience...)
1. "Sing 'Em Good My Friend"
This is one of my favorites. In true KC style, he pairs heavier material (a dying wife, a life full of regret) with an upbeat, easy rhythm that somehow still leaves you feeling better. A man is selling his guitar, giving the buyer a lot of life advice we could all use every once in a while. "Cause honestly, honesty never goes outta style, so sing the pain, my friend."
Listen to when: you need a reminder of what's truly important.
2. "I'm A Small Town"
I know what you're probably thinking. There are a million different country songs about small towns, so why is this one special? Not that I'm poking fun; I have about a hundred of them on my iPod. But what I love about this one is that it's from the perspective of the town, itself. This story is not told by the people, but by the place. Their place. "Either I hold your heart, or I hold ya down... I'm a small town."
Listen to When: you're homesick.
3. "Boston"
Ever wanted to just pack a bag, chuck your cell phone in the trash and move to some far away island where nobody cares about Instagram likes or what grade you got on that Econ final? Well, this girl did. And for three and a half minutes we get to live vicariously through her. "She wears a Red Sox cap to hide her baby dreads, the girl she was in New England is different now and dead."
Listen to when: you're looking for a change.
4. "Scare Me"
We've all had that person who came into our lives and turned it absolutely upside down, in that great sort of way. This song is about falling in love and just how dang terrifying that can be. "Knowing there's no turning back, knowing I don't want to..."
Listen to when: you've got a crush.
Hope you like them!
