They say writing is good for the soul. Well, whoever said this is not wrong. I've been writing creatively for some time now and I'm so glad I made the choice. Writing has never been a chore for me. If anything, I couldn't wait for those assignments where we had the freedom to write whatever we chose. I love to write poetry, short stories, and streams of consciousness. Not only is writing a great way for me to let my feelings out and have my voice be heard, but also to provide my perspective on several issues.
As a junior in high school, I stumbled across this website called Odyssey, on which I now post. As alumni of my high school started their college career, they began advertising their Odyssey articles on social media. I would read their articles and became inspired.
As a high school student, I was unable to write for the Odyssey. It wasn’t until I began college that luckily I came across a flyer to join Rider University's Odyssey community. Because I loved writing so much, I couldn't pass up on this great opportunity.
I requested to join the team where I answered a few questions. One of those questions asked me "What kind of content do you want to create for the Odyssey?"
For Odyssey, I wanted to tell my story.
I wanted to let my readers in on my life and be able to have them connect with me mentally and emotionally. Eventually, I was accepted as a writer for Odyssey and I began formulating my ideas.
Through the numerous articles I've written thus far in my college career, I have found a passion within that I will not let go. Like I've mentioned, I've always had a love for writing. And as you all know, I am passionate about teaching, and look forward to the day that my dream of becoming an educator is realized.
Through writing weekly articles for myself and my readers, I discovered that not only do I want to teach, but I want to teach English.
Through Odyssey, I have found my identity in my storytelling and my poetry. I came to the realization that I want to teach Elementary/Middle School English because I want to be that teacher that inspires my students to love writing just as much as I do. I want my students to tell their stories and be open about their life like I am with Odyssey.
Even if you don’t think joining Odyssey is for you, I still encourage you to write daily. Whether it be poetry, short stories, streams of consciousness, or anything in between, writing is indeed good for the soul, and writing daily will ensure an increase in brain activity and will allow your voice to be heard.
