Formal Chapter Attire Dos And Don'ts

5193

Some chapters are used to wearing formal or pin attire to every chapter meeting throughout the year, but other chapters are a little luckier because they have a few casual weeks, too. Sorority women seem to have a love/hate relationship with dressing up for chapter. Some hate it, some love it and there is rarely an in between. Regardless of which side you fall on, here is a list of dos and don’ts for your formal chapter attire.

DO wear heels or wedges. If you are wearing a really cute dress and flats or sandals, then you are not doing that dress any justice. The way to instantly class up an outfit is to add a pair of heels or wedges. They make you look like you actually care and, let’s face it, everyone’s legs look better in heels.

DON’T just put on a dress and leave everything else sloppy. If you have on an adorable outfit with no jewelry and your hair up in a wet messy bun like you just rolled out of bed, then you probably look the same as if you were wearing a t-shirt and Nike shorts. Fix your hair, at least put on a statement necklace and mascara never hurts. Nothing says, “I hate formal chapter” more than a good dress being masked by lack of effort everywhere else.

DO dress appropriately. It is a big room full of girls. There is no need to wear your short/tight skirt and have cleavage hanging out. On a Friday night your sisters might be jealous of that outfit, but on a Monday evening it is just not appropriate. I have a nice little separation in my closet of going out dresses and chapter dresses. Sometimes you can even get away with throwing a cardigan or blazer over a going out dress that has an appropriate length. A great place to find appropriate and really cute outfits is New York and Company.

DON’T use the excuse, “I’m just coming from class”. It’s not going to kill you to take five minutes and pull a dress and heels out of your backpack and throw them on in the bathroom right before meeting. Do it out of respect for the chapter and your sisters who do have to get ready.

If, heaven forbid, you do not want to do these things for your chapter, then do them for the cute fraternity boys who come in dressed in their best blazers to invite you to a mixer or their philanthropy events. Yes, they are nervous as all get out standing in front of all your gorgeous sisters, but guys still notice those things.

For as long as I can remember, I have been listening to The Beatles. Every year, my mom would appropriately blast “Birthday” on anyone’s birthday. I knew all of the words to “Back In The U.S.S.R” by the time I was 5 (Even though I had no idea what or where the U.S.S.R was). I grew up with John, Paul, George, and Ringo instead Justin, JC, Joey, Chris and Lance (I had to google N*SYNC to remember their names). The highlight of my short life was Paul McCartney in concert twice. I’m not someone to “fangirl” but those days I fangirled hard. The music of The Beatles has gotten me through everything. Their songs have brought me more joy, peace, and comfort. I can listen to them in any situation and find what I need. Here are the best lyrics from The Beatles for every and any occasion.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.
