Another day, and yet another famous musician dead.
On Thursday, we lost the Artist Known as Prince, marking yet another brick in the wall, so to speak. In the last five months alone we have lost Lemmy of Motorhead, David Bowie, Glenn Frey of the Eagles, Maurice White of Earth, Wind and Fire, and now Prince.
The question on everyone else’s mind is: why?
Why?
What has been going on this year that has caused some of our favorite singers and musicians to die? And who could possibly be next?
I do not know how to answer that question, but now that Prince is forever dancing in the purple rain, let’s take a moment to pay our respects.
Prince was everything an artist should be: a great showman, terrific guitar player, amazing songwriter and one heck of a vocalist.
He was the only guy to really have a chance at threatening Michael Jackson’s hold on the early 80’s with his hit movie Purple Rain and the soundtrack of the same name. The soundtrack was certified 13 times platinum in the United States and featured the hit singles ‘When Doves Cry’ and ‘Let’s Go Crazy’ both of which were number one hits.
As his career advanced, he lost the rights to his name and experienced a decline in popularity but his legacy endured. In 2007, during Super Bowl 41, Prince put on perhaps the greatest halftime show in Super Bowl history. Performing in the middle of a giant downpour, it was only fitting that he performed ‘Purple Rain’ in the rain.
I might get a lot of flack for this, but for all of his showmanship, he was perhaps the true king of the 80’s. We will forever miss him and his artistry. Life is just not fair sometimes.
So into the night you go, sweet Prince. Until we meet again.
