Spoiler Alert: Although I won't be giving away any huge events in the movie, I will mention the basic plot. So if you haven't seen it yet and don't want to know anything, you should probably stop reading now.
Maybe it was because it was impossible to escape seeing something related to or Star Wars themed. Maybe it was because people suggested it to me. Maybe it was because the trailer made it seem like a genuinely awesome movie. Or maybe it was a little of everything. Whatever it was, I found myself wanting to go see the seventh movie in a series that I knew pretty much nothing about.
So other than knowing some basic facts (i.e. there's a lot about good vs. evil, Darth Vader is Luke and Leia's father, Han Solo and Princess Leia are a couple but not until after that awkward situation I won't go into, light sabers are cool and the force is apparently really important) I went into the movie theater having no idea what to expect.
After how much hype had been built up, and after seeing and hearing so many great reviews, my expectations couldn't have been higher. A part of me wondered though, how much of it came from nostalgia, something that I, of course, wouldn't really have.
I was so wrong.
You don't have to know everything that happened in the previous movies. Basically, all you need to know is this, which is the official synopsis:
Thirty years after the defeat of the Galactic Empire, the galaxy faces a new threat from the evil Kylo Ren (Adam Driver) and the First Order. When a defector named Finn crash-lands on a desert planet, he meets Rey (Daisy Ridley), a tough scavenger whose droid contains a top-secret map. Together, the young duo joins forces with Han Solo (Harrison Ford) to make sure the Resistance receives the intelligence concerning the whereabouts of Luke Skywalker (Mark Hamill), the last of the Jedi Knights.
There's definitely a lot of nostalgia for those who are already fans, but as a movie all on it's own, it's still so entertaining. The basic plot is given to you via the famous Star Wars scrolling style. The movie is well paced with plenty of action and fighting as well as slower moments with more dialogue. Although serious at times, there is also a great amount of humor as well.
Rey (Daisy Ridley) and Finn (John Boyega) are so awesome to watch together and have great chemistry. (Seriously, how do you leave this movie not shipping them?) And Kylo Ren (Adam Driver) is very much like Darth Vader, as far as I could tell, but either way his character is complex. And despite not seeing any of the other six films, it was still really cool seeing Han Solo, Princess General Leia, Chewbacca, and other past characters come back.
So basically, if you like fast-paced action movies in space with humor, some cute moments, and adorable little round robots, then you should definitely see this movie. But be warned, if you do, you're going to want to watch the first six, so I suggest watching it when you have plenty of time.
