First of all, here are a few of the awful events that have occurred in the last two weeks. (I say few because we all know how bias the media is, and therefore, it is very likely other important events occurring around the world are being hidden.)
1. Brock Turner raped an unconscious girl, and only got six months of jail time.
2. Omar Mateen murdered 49 people at the club Pulse in Orlando.
3. Shooting at the market in Tel Aviv.
4. The Syrian regime bombarded the starving city of Daraya a few hours after they got food aid delivery.
5. In January of this year, Al-Shabaab militants detonated explosives at a Kenyan military camp killing 141 soldiers (but CNN reports this as “Kenya covers up military massacre”).
There are so many more things that may have happened, and we just don’t know about them.
Within the last two weeks, our faith in humanity has incredibly decreased. Whether you are an optimist or a pessimist, there is a certain level of human decency you expect from others. You expect someone to have the decency to not rape an unconscious girl, but rather to help her get home safely. You want to believe that this time by not focusing on questions about her outfit and how much she had to drink, society will take her side instead of his.
You want to believe that people are not going to kill others because of different opinions or religious and personal ideologies. The reality is today's world is really dark and cruel, and it consists of people who would rather see the world burn than come to terms with the changing society. There is a population that quietly sits back hurting at the sight of everything that is happening, and there is another population that rises against this darkness, fights against it and pulls others along with them.
These are the people who are expressing their sadness and their opinions in a manner that seems to educate others. To be able to put themselves out there without the fear of what others may say is respectable and admirable. These are the people we should follow because it takes more than one person to make a difference. These are the individuals who fight for the people that we do not even know of. For those who are too afraid to speak up, these are the people we want to be someday.
Many people say “I am horrified that this event has occurred. My thoughts and prayers are with the victims and families.” While what they're saying is respectable, it won’t change anything. In today’s world, we need people to be educated about not just the event, but the history behind it because not all of these events had or have a Facebook filter. Hell, not all of these events are even heard about. How does having a filter change anything? You can show solidarity through a picture, but it's your words that create an impact.
So, now is not the time for you to stay quiet. Now is not the time for you to care about what society will say about your outspokenness. Now is the time for you to educate the ones around you who are unwilling to look at all the bad things that are happening around this world.
