When it comes to choosing a college, you're no doubt excited. However, there are a few things that you need to keep in mind along the way.
1. This is your decision, not your parents
Sometimes, parents have a strong opinion on where you should go. This is something you should always take into account. However, they are not the ones who will be going to the college. You are. You need to choose somewhere that is going to make you happy. You need to find somewhere that you feel comfortable. Someplace that feels like your home away from home.
2. Don't follow your best friend or significant other
You may be scared. I know I was. But don't let that tempt you to follow your best friend or significant other. It may be hard to be away from them, but true friends and relationships will make it through some time and distance apart. I promise you that you will make new friends in college, and meet so many new people. But you won't forget about your best friends from home.
3. Don't decide against a college just because your best friend or significant other is going there
Sometimes it just so happens that you might fall in love with the same college as your best friend or significant other. That's ok. Don't let that deter you from going there. You might not want others to think that you only chose to go there for them. But what other's think really does not matter.
4. You don't always have to choose the college with the best program
You may be tempted to choose the college with the highest rated program for your major. However, this is not always a necessity. You will do fine with a degree in your major from any college. Ultimately, you are the one who will be showing your talents. A big name next to yours might be a good thing, but someone who doesn't work hard from Big Name University won't get the job if you graduate from Small Town College and work hard and made a name for yourself.
When you are looking at colleges, remember that your mental health should always come first. If a college feels wrong, then don't go to it! Choose the one that feels the best to you. Choose the one where you can get involved and do great things. Choosing your college should be a fun time! Don't stress out too much, and ultimately, listen to your heart.
