Moms and dads play different but equally important roles in a child's life. It takes a special type of mom to take on both, and do an absolutely incredible job. I've had the privilege of having one of those moms raise, as well as inspire me.
The day I was born, my mom had my dad beside her. The two of them welcomed me into the world that day, as well as into their family. They cared for me together, raised me together and loved me together.
From an early age, I saw the different roles that my parents each played in my life. My mom was the one that did arts and crafts with me, took me shopping and watched Disney movies with me on rainy days. I turned to her for friend problems, and she helped me weigh my options when making decisions. She taught me about kindness, love and what it means to be a part of a community.
My dad, on the other hand, taught me how to pull weeds and string a fishing pole. He also taught me the value of hard work and the true meanings of the words strength, character and integrity. Beside his taste in music, the greatest thing I took away from him was how to respect myself and stand up for what I believe in.
Until I was 13, my whole life was shaped by the balance of the influence these two people had on me. And then, my family was thrown the ultimate curveball when my dad passed away from cancer.
It really is amazing how quickly a person's life can change. In a singular last breath, I went from having two parents to having one, and my mom went from having a husband to being a single mother.
From that moment on, my mom was no longer just a mom. She didn't have any say in the matter. She didn't get a chance to say no or bow out. She just jumped in and did it. That day, she took on the role of being a dad too.
There are plenty more moms out there just like her. Moms who lost the father of their children too soon. Moms who watched the father of their children leave by choice. Moms who support a family while the father of their children is serving overseas. Moms that never had the father of their children in their lives. Regardless of the situation, they are strong, selfless and courageous.
All of these moms work double-time to give their children the things they need and the happy lives they deserve. They take care of their homes with only one pair of hands. They drive to school, sports practices and friends houses with only one car. They give all the love and support of two parents with just one heart. It's truly incredible what these women can pull off.
I have been blessed to have one of these very special moms. Through every challenge, my mom has given all of herself so that I could have greatest life I could have imagined. Whether she realizes it or not, she's the reason for the sparkle in my eyes and the smile on my face. I've been told a million times that I get it from her.
To all the moms that are dads too, you are appreciated. Even as kids, we know it's not easy, and we know that's our fault sometimes, but we can't thank you enough for all that you've done for us. We can only hope that one day we can give it back to you, because you deserve everything. We love you.
I love you, mom.
