It is the first thing you do in the morning and the last thing you do at night, if you are like most people in today’s society you check social media more than you would like to admit. There are great things that social media offers; a different way to communicate with others, allows ideas to be exchanged, and it provides us with accessible news from all over the world. With all great things comes negativity.
My daily routine consists of checking my Snapchat, my Facebook, my Instagram, and my email at least 50 times a day... that’s a lot. Why am I so addicted to knowing what is going on around the world than I am about what is going on around me. I see people together in cafes, restaurants, school, in social settings and they are all on their phone! They are ignoring each other’s presence to see what is going on somewhere else with someone else. This device has become so complex that we cannot live without it. People are becoming less human and more electronic. There is a sense of less emotion towards other people in person and more emotion towards people on the internet.
Hiding behind a screen has become easier than ever. People now say things that they would never say in person. It is easier to cyber bully, flirt, and become a different person than who you actually are in real life. I use real life because that who you are, when you're not behind the screen, is who you are in society. People have found ways to make themselves appealing by using other pictures, words, etc. to catch the attention of others. I am sure you have heard of "catfishing", the attempt to lure in a person with a false identity. People are doing that more than ever now! I know a couple of people who catfish and get mad when the guy or girl doesn’t talk to them again after meeting them. It is not right to hide yourself; it gives you a disservice to yourself.
I admit, I honestly tried to live without social media, but it is the temptress of my weakness. I don’t try to hide who I am on social media; whether you like me or not, I don’t care. I do post annoying pictures and memes because I like to do it. I do ignore the people around me to see what is going on with others. I also talk to others via social media when I have a physical person next to me and I am not talking to them. I know I have things to work on with my addiction to media but I think we all do.
We need to grow and become more appreciative of the things and people around us. We are so caught up in a fad that we tend not to see what is around us.
