For The Love Of Coffee

What Makes Coffee the Drink of Choice for College Students

For The Love Of Coffee

Café au lait, dark chocolate, skim milk.

I have my mother's drink order memorized like it's the back of my hand. (She's been ordering the same thing from the Coffee Tree since I was eight years old.) However, similar to the first time I tried taking a shot of vodka, I gagged at the taste of coffee as though I were drinking dirty toilet water. Up until the beginning of my second semester of my freshman year, I loathed the drink (coffee, I mean). Now, I swear I'm Lorelai Gilmore because I can't go through a single day without the familiar taste of liquidated bitter brown beans on my tongue and the scent of my local coffee house on my clothes.

What in the world causes college kids to become addicted to coffee as soon as they set foot on campus? Is it because we want to be aesthetically pleasing, where a cup of Joe between our palms makes each of us appear to be the quasi-hipster-indie-worldly-brooding-writerly type: a seemingly sexier, more disheveled version of the high-strung students that we actually are? Or, much more simply, is it because we students need the caffeine to survive the ever accelerating pace of existence?

Either way, coffee is fuel - the fuel that keeps us awake through the night so that we can finish that twenty page chemistry lab report or that English term paper on the symbolism behind To Kill a Mockingbird. It's the same fuel that lights the vibrant, vivacious fire to friendships and enduringly intelligent conversations. Coffee wakes up Lorelai Gilmore, but it allows me to sink deeper into myself. It facilitates discussion, laughter, and thought, and it brings old friends back together as well as new ones even closer.

T.S. Eliot once wrote that he "measured out [his] life in coffee spoons" ("The Love Song of Alfred J. Prufrock"). If the day that I die, the most intelligent conversations, brightest smiles, loudest laughter, most brutal all-nighters, and hardest of mornings are staring back up at me through a reflection in a mug of steaming, chocolate colored, bitter liquid, I'll know I lived life right.

So for now, I'll take a Café au lait, dark chocolate, skim milk.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

These powerful lyrics remind us how much good is inside each of us and that sometimes we are too blinded by our imperfections to see the other side of the coin, to see all of that good.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

The song was sent to me late in the middle of the night. I was still awake enough to plug in my headphones and listen to it immediately. I always did this when my best friend sent me songs, never wasting a moment. She had sent a message with this one too, telling me it reminded her so much of both of us and what we have each been through in the past couple of months.

Zodiac wheel with signs and symbols surrounding a central sun against a starry sky.

What's your sign? It's one of the first questions some of us are asked when approached by someone in a bar, at a party or even when having lunch with some of our friends. Astrology, for centuries, has been one of the largest phenomenons out there. There's a reason why many magazines and newspapers have a horoscope page, and there's also a reason why almost every bookstore or library has a section dedicated completely to astrology. Many of us could just be curious about why some of us act differently than others and whom we will get along with best, and others may just want to see if their sign does, in fact, match their personality.

Being a good person does not depend on your religion or status in life, your race or skin color, political views or culture. It depends on how good you treat others.

We are all born to do something great. Whether that be to grow up and become a doctor and save the lives of thousands of people, run a marathon, win the Noble Peace Prize, or be the greatest mother or father for your own future children one day. Regardless, we are all born with a purpose. But in between birth and death lies a path that life paves for us; a path that we must fill with something that gives our lives meaning.
