Look at the title of this article, it seems as though I would be talking about marriage, right? One day maybe, but that day is not today. So instead, I'm just going to share some of what I've been going through and hope that this helps someone at some point to understand the point of prayer.
Growing up, I thought I understood everything about anything and couldn't tell you what I wrong about when I was. One thing that I thought I knew everything about was my relationship with God. Growing up in the church, I thought I had everything figured out. Everything would be going great, something bad would happen, I'd talk to God, he'd straighten it out, and then everything would be okay again. For years, I thought that God and I were tight and that no mater what he had my back whenever I needed him.
I wasn't wrong with my thinking. I was wrong with my actions.
What I've come to learn is that I can't just talk to God and spend time with him only when tough times come around. Trust me, tough times will come. But as Christians, the Church, we are called to be the bride of Christ and Jesus is the bridegroom. As a Church, we have been entered into a relationship with Him through Christ dying for us on the cross. One thing in a relationship that is key is communication and can we maintain a relationship that is one sided?
We can't.
See, my thinking that God would help me in the tough times was correct. But my actions were wrong because I only talked to Him when I was in tough times. But relationships aren't just built in the tough times, but also in the good.
God works on our behalf all the time and if we are only talking to him when we think we need him, the relationship is broken and is more taking than giving. Relationships aren't just about taking, but also about giving. God deserves our praise and thankfulness in the good times and the bad. He wants to hear our prayers in the darkest of times and in the lightest. For better or worse. God wants to hear from us in all of the situations that we find ourselves in, good or bad. He wants to build a relationship with us that will last: for better or worse.
So talk to him in the good and tough times. Spend time with him each day no matter what. Sit in his presence and let him speak. Relationships are two sided, both need to make an effort and he's already waiting. So, will you say "I do?"
