Most of the world’s population does not have to deal with the struggle of hunger or starvation on a daily basis, most do not give a second thought to how the world decides who gets to be feed. The growth of hunger in the world’s population is growing to staggering numbers, especially in the developing countries all over the earth. This may seem surprising to some but, politics are one of the key components on the oversight of food distribution in today’s world. Some areas have such a surplus of food that most is wasted which is a problem when it comes to trying to decrease the number of people in the population going hungry. Politics play a huge role in how food is dispersed through the nations of the world. This is where we as citizens take notice that the highest rates of starvation are cases in developing countries made up from what we in America would be considered as minorities.
This is than a different issue not just that people are suffering from starvation but the fact that food is controlled and used to settle disagreements or create new allies between governed countries. One must think that in history there have been times that the world has had lesser amounts of agriculture. This becomes an issue today when the food that is produced in some countries cannot be given to others due to political stances or economic backgrounds. The deciding factor for if you are able to get your hands on food is that of a political state. This state being those who can afford financially the agriculture needed to grow crops versus those countries that live in poverty who cannot afford enough agriculture to supply their citizens with enough food to live. Food today is not something that is easily given or received like our ancestral counter parts but food is now a political game.
These ideas come into question when we try to solve the global issue of hunger. The world’s population is growing at a steady pace as well as the growth of hunger in mostly developing countries. So how is it that the world may be producing enough food right now to feed the human population but the agricultural systems will not? This is a complicated question that has many breakdowns within the argument. Number one, like stated before food is not considered in the same light as it was in our past generations, now food is used under circumstances which make agriculture a way to control a population of people. Number two, agriculture and the trading of its produce is now a political game within those countries that can afford to do so. Food has created so many conflicts between nations due to the fact that food is a basic necessity which is needed by all to survive.growing in other parts of the world as well as in our country we see the extreme difference in some parts that are able to obtain enough food to increase the amount of children and adults suffering from the life long fight of obesity.
In countries like the United States we have a vast production of food in some places, others the population are unable to obtain enough food to live. This shows the correlation between race, politics and food the issue between these three topics are contributing to the growth of two epidemics which are not strengthening our population either way. The fact that agriculture is not controlled by those who need the food by each individual state's political policies helps extend the correlation between the food game and politics which every country in the world suffers from to a certain extent.
The political system we unfortunately live in today controls the main activities of the agricultural system in the world. Agriculture in today’s world is no longer a normal commodity but something that can create war and struggle for those who cannot afford the food themselves. The political game that is played is used by all governments to a certain extent to keep the upper hand on the economic issues resulting from the political games they play. the use of food as something that is not a necessity to humans is irresponsible especially when there is a clear cut difference and view on who gets to eat and who cannot get enough food to eat. The true fact that race also has a place in this mix is not surprising to me whatsoever. During this time in the modern era agriculture is out of our hands. It is becoming so industrialized that it starts to fit the mold into the capitalistic society we live in today. This also gives a reasoning behind the fact that in most developing cultures there is a higher risk of starvation due to the fact that they do not have enough money to buy land to have their own agriculture but the more developed countries do have the economic balance therefore can do what they want with the unclaimed land.
While researching I popped by the term called Food Politcs multiple times, according to the The Oxford Handbook of Food, Politics, and Society edited by Ronald J. Herring, the book gives a pretty clear definition of what Food Politics are Herring explains, “the definition usefully draws attention to the critical power issues involved in Food Politics – which groups have power and resources and, which groups are marginalized” (647). This explains how politics are growing increasingly strong in the last few years when it comes to agriculture due to the growth of marginalization of smaller developing countries compared to those who are already developed and initiating control of their unclaimed land to grow crops. So next time you think about where you are stopping for dinner, please recognize that most people are fortunate to have food no other questions asked but “do you want fries with that”.
