Food for Thought for the College Student: The Quote Edition

In college, people experience all sorts of things. Some individuals join sports teams or Greek life, while others join academic organizations, intramural, or a variety of other organizations. The types of experiences we have during these four or so years really depend on how we spend our moments while we are here. Regardless of the different paths one may take, however, we all have much more in common than we may realize.

I have always been an avid believer that every one should spend time, now and again, doing a little something that I like to call “quote-searching.” There comes an extraordinary novelty with the realization that there is an infinite amount of quotes existing right under our noses, waiting to be discovered. Regardless of the language, quotes speak to every person in a different way, leaving every reader with a changed message and unique meaning. Let that reason be discovered. It is truly amazing how someone else’s words, that have existed for maybe hundreds of years, can have such an impact on your mood, day, or even the outlook you have on life.

So, as a quote lover, I decided to put together a little “food for thought” collection of sayings that I believe will speak true to everyone.

“When you feel overwhelmed, do no react. Stop, close your eyes, and exhale through your heart for 3-6 minutes. Then ask what path you should take. Take a few minutes to relax, exhale through your heart and ask again. You will be surprised at how your inner voice steers you in the right direction away from overwhelm." -Jacki Whitford

“There will be a time when we must choose between what is easy, and what is right.” –A. Dumbledore

“When you have a bad day, a really bad day, try and treat the world better than it treated you.” -Patrick Stump

“Normality is a paved road: It’s comfortable to walk, but no flowers grow on it.” –Vincent Van Gogh

“Respond to every call that excites your spirit” -Rumi

“Inspiration exists, but it has to find you working.” –Pablo Picasso

“Love yourself. Accept yourself. Forgive yourself and be good to yourself because without you the rest of us are without a source of many wonderful things.” -Leo F. Buscaglia

“Be yourself. Above all, let who you are, what you believe and all that you love shine through every sentence you write, every canvas you paint, every piece you finish.” -John Jakes

“I have found that most people are about as happy as they make their minds to be.” –Abraham Lincoln

“Be with those who help your being.” -Rumi

And as one of my favorite quotes expresses, it's OK to not know where you are going nor what it is that you want. We are young, and we are able. The sweetest experiences are often those we never expected to have, so welcome them when they come and embrace them for as long as they stay.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

These powerful lyrics remind us how much good is inside each of us and that sometimes we are too blinded by our imperfections to see the other side of the coin, to see all of that good.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

The song was sent to me late in the middle of the night. I was still awake enough to plug in my headphones and listen to it immediately. I always did this when my best friend sent me songs, never wasting a moment. She had sent a message with this one too, telling me it reminded her so much of both of us and what we have each been through in the past couple of months.

What's your sign? It's one of the first questions some of us are asked when approached by someone in a bar, at a party or even when having lunch with some of our friends. Astrology, for centuries, has been one of the largest phenomenons out there. There's a reason why many magazines and newspapers have a horoscope page, and there's also a reason why almost every bookstore or library has a section dedicated completely to astrology. Many of us could just be curious about why some of us act differently than others and whom we will get along with best, and others may just want to see if their sign does, in fact, match their personality.

Being a good person does not depend on your religion or status in life, your race or skin color, political views or culture. It depends on how good you treat others.

We are all born to do something great. Whether that be to grow up and become a doctor and save the lives of thousands of people, run a marathon, win the Noble Peace Prize, or be the greatest mother or father for your own future children one day. Regardless, we are all born with a purpose. But in between birth and death lies a path that life paves for us; a path that we must fill with something that gives our lives meaning.
