Flu season is here. Everyone says that being sick at college sucks. But, being sick is being sick, right? It can't be that bad. Puking can't be any worse than it actually is.

I know it's hard to imagine, but the flu can be worse than it already is. You won't ever know what it feels like until you're in the situation, but here's a little taste of what it feels like to have the flu in college.

1. You want your mom

No one knows what to do for you besides your mom & anything someone tries to do for you besides your mom just isn’t right.

2. People assume you're puking from drinking

Yes, it's Friday night and no, I didn’t go out. But, yes I’m still puking. It’s called the flu.

3. Community bathrooms

You have to walk all the way from your dorm room to the community bathroom on your floor just to puke. It just sucks. It really does.

4. The endless stream of people asking if you're OK

I appreciate the concern, but seriously. At home, my siblings didn’t care if I was OK, in fact, they were probably happy I was out of their way. Dealing with a few texts from your friends asking why you weren’t at school isn’t bad. However, it sucks when every time you hear a door open you have to pray it’s not someone coming into the bathroom. Because if it’s someone coming into the bathroom they’re gonna ask if you’re OK and assume you’re drunk. No, I’m not OK, but please just let me puke in peace.

5. You really miss home

Like really freaking bad. You just wanna puke in your own bathroom and from your own bed.

6. You have no food to eat

Dorm food hardly cuts it when you’re healthy. It definitely doesn’t cut it when you’re sick. And those crackers and that cup of soup you thought you had saved away, seemed to disappear.

7. You have roommates

I'm sorry— my goal here is not to get you sick. I'll try to be as sanitary as possible, but I really can't help it.

8. Your lofted bed

I'm sorry, but I can't climb up there when I'm puking every hour. Guess I'll have to sleep on the floor...

9. You want your mom

Again, like really bad.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.
