Do you remember being a kid in the 90s? Well, I definitely do! I want you to imagine yourself as a child again waking up to watching some of the best cartoon shows on TV. I remember coming home from school and just looking forward to finishing my homework so then I could watch the Rugrats. I miss being able to sing along with the theme songs. I miss all the toys I couldn't wait to go to the store and buy, but the thing I especially miss most are all these shows on TV.
Today all these shows that had once been the favorite part of my childhood have become almost non-existent. I believe it is our duty to advise newer generations of some of the best shows of all time. Well, to begin, we're going to countdown my top 10 favorite shows of the 90s that will be sure to flash you back to the good ol’ 90s when life was a lot simpler and less worrisome than it is for us now.
1. "The Wild Thornberrys"
I’m sure you all remember the Thornberrys: Nigel, Eliza, Deborah, Marianne, and Darwin. I mean, who could forget them? That was the only show I remember that was set around a nomadic family that lived in Africa. My favorite character by far and the one I remember the most is Eliza. She could talk to animals! I remember watching her and her chimpanzee Darwin going on adventures together in the wilderness and I wished I could do the same. When I was little I actually thought us kids could communicate with animals because of her. This was by far my favorite show of the 90s and the one I miss the most.
2. "The Rugrats"
Oh my gosh! Where do I even begin? "The Rugrats," a pack of babies that could talk and go on adventures together. I remember I was so obsessed with them I had a Tommy stuffed baby. I actually still have him in my room somewhere! You can’t forget about the Rugrats movie when Tommy, Chuckie, Phil, Lil and Dil went on their wild adventure and got lost in the forest.
3. "Blue's Clues"
Blue's Clues was one of those kids show that involved a dog named Blue who always wanted to go on adventures and do something. Steve, his owner, never knew what Blue wanted to do. So, they would play "Blue’s Clues" to try and decide what Blue wanted to do. I remember the show involved us kids playing along and trying to find the clues along with Blue.
4. "As Told By Ginger"
The show "As Told By Ginger" related to every girl out there in some way. It was focused around a junior high school girl named Ginger who was a part of the geek squad. Her goal was to become the most popular girl in school. My friends and I at one point in our school days wanted to be “that popular girl” too. This show follows her adventures and obstacles with her friends as she tries to raise the bar and make her way into the popular girl squad with Courtney.
5. "Courage the Cowardly Dog"
This show was one of the weirdest shows aired in the 90s, but it was also one of the best. Courage was a pink dog who, by mistake, sent his parents into space. He was found by an old lady named Muriel, who took him to her house in Kansas. It was a rundown, creepy old house out in the middle of nowhere. She lived with her husband Eustace, who was a cranky old man who never liked Courage. Courage is always on the lookout because strange things happen and he always ended up fighting off monsters and aliens.
6. "Scooby Doo, Where Are You!"
Ok, we all remember Scooby Doo and the gang: Fred, Daphne, Shaggy, Scooby Doo, and Velma. They used to travel around in their green van solving mysteries. Every time I put on that show I would crack out my Scooby Doo graham snacks (which I miss very much) and help them solve the mysteries. One year for Halloween I even dressed up as Daphne and I had collectible figures from Scooby Doo (which I still have). You could say I was a little obsessed.
7. "Full House"
Full House was one of the best shows of the 90s centered around three men: Danny Tanner, Uncle Jesse, and Joey. When Danny’s wife suddenly died, the two other boys moved in with him to help raise his three girls: D.J., Stephanie, and Michelle who I must say for myself were a handful for three guys. They had to learn to not only be dads but also moms. Kimmy Gibbler, D.J.’s best friend always shows up at the house uninvited and is essentially a member of the family. Uncle Jesse eventually marries Rebecca and they have two twin boys. When this show ended I was devastated and would watch re-runs but now since Netflix came out with Fuller House I already finished the first season. I’m sure all Full House fans have joined me in binge watching this TV show.
8. "Hey Arnold!"
Who could forget football head, a.k.a. Arnold who lives in a small house with his grandparents, neighbors and friends? Helga G. Pataski, the girl who supposedly hates Arnold is secretly in love with him and has a shrine of him in her room.
9. "The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air"
Will Smith, a rebellious teenager is taken in by his uncle and aunt who are a high society family. The Banks family goal is to make Will a smart, mature young man but he has other plans for them. I love watching re-runs of this and singing along with the theme song.
10. "Friends"
"Friends" is still aired on TV but was released in the 90s. I had to include it in my list because it was one of my favorite shows centered around 6 friends who live in the West Village. I mean, come on, who doesn’t wanna have as much fun as this group of friends?
