As we turn into the new year, you might be hyper-aware of the fact that Valentine’s day is just around the corner. Whether you’re happily single, looking, or in a relationship, you might be just about ready to snuggle up in your pajamas, warm up some hot cocoa, and turn on some good old romantic comedies. Regardless of the status of your love life, it’s always nice to drift off for a moment into a world of Hollywood romance, where meet-cutes are ample, timing is always impeccably perfect, and loose ends are rare.
But the trouble is, maybe you’re tired of the classic girl-meets-boy romantic comedy. The film loses some of its suspense when you know that the two main characters are going to end up together, despite the two (maybe three) obstacles that fall in their way. So if you want to be romanced, but you want a unique storyline, look no further! Here, before you, I lay out five unique, romantic movies that will keep you on your toes.
1. Before Sunrise
This film is an indulgence in the fantasy that we all have; that we might meet an attractive stranger on the train, form an instant connection with them, and spend the rest of the day gallivanting through Europe by their side. While the premise may seem a little hard to believe, I promise you that the story feels authentic as the conversations between Jesse (Ethan Hawke) and Celine (Julie Delpie) grow. While a lot of rom-coms are just about the build-up to that first kiss, Before Sunrise builds after that kiss, which, quite realistically, is a little awkward. Throughout their night together, Jesse and Celine roam the streets of Vienna and learn about each other- their endearing quirks as well as their flaws. All the while, they know that after tonight, they’ll never speak again.
2. Amelie
This is a French film, so before you settle yourself in your couch cushions, make sure that you have the subtitles on and un baguette con beurre to snack on. The film is delightfully vibrant- filled with bright reds, greens, and yellows. The main character, Amelie, is wide-eyed and thoughtful, with a taste for adventure. When she comes across a photo album full of discarded clippings from a photo booth, she sends the mysterious owner of the book on a quest across the city to find it- and her.
3. The Shape of Water
I went to the theatre to watch this movie this past week and I absolutely loved it. If you haven’t heard of it yet, "The Shape of Water" tells the story of a mute woman who falls in love with an ambiguous sea creature. Unable to communicate through words, the pair speak to one another through sign language, music, and dance. It’s a story about a love that is true and pure yet isn’t accepted by society.
4. Sleepwalk With Me
This movie was written and directed by one of my personal favorite comedians, Mike Birbiglia. Based off of his own love story with his wife, it’s a very real account of two people who are realizing that they are falling for one another and have absolutely not control over it. Like any of his pieces, it’s honest, funny and moving.
5. Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind
This, I can not emphasize enough, is the movie that you need to see. The majority of the movie takes place in Joel Parish’s mind as his memories of his relationship with his ex-girlfriend are erased bit-by-bit. The film takes us on a backward journey through a relationship, the highs and the lows. It leaves us with one final question: Even if we know a relationship won’t work out, will we still pursue it?
