There are many things that I now do that I never did before going to college. College changes how you do certain things and that is perfectly okay. Here is a list of things that I have to thank college for because I never used to do them before!
1. For teaching me how to take naps
Before college, I could never take naps. I would always lay down and just toss and turn. After the first two months of college, I was taking naps like a champion. I swear as soon as my head hit my pillow, I was out cold.
2. For teaching me how to use my debit card more
At home, I would carry cash with my everywhere and for this reason, I never needed to use my debit card. Well...when you go off to college far enough to where your bank is no longer in your location, this enables you to use your debit card. There is no bank or ATM that I can withdraw money from. This is probably a good thing though because money is easily lost. I can't tell you how many times I've lost $20 from my pockets. With a debit card, you keep it in a safe place and only take it when you need it!
3. For allowing me to leave after I get done taking a test in class
In high school, you were always in class until the bell would ring for you to leave. Even on test days, you had to sit there until the very end of the period, bored out of your mind, because your teacher wasn't going to teach another new lesson after a test. In college, you are allowed to leave once you are done thank goodness! Some college classes last over two hours, so just imagine having to sit there until time is up.
4. For making me do things on my own
College is a place where you truly get to be on your own and discover who you are. Your parents aren't around to do everything for you and you have to learn how to make decisions (big or small) for yourself and on your own. Yes, you can ask your parents for advice via phone call, but in reality the final decision is totally up to you.
5. For bringing me my best friends
Before college began, I always thought my high school friends would be my best friends for life. Little did I know that all of that would change within a few short months. High school was a chapter of the past and college is the chapter of the present and future. This being said, with a new chapter comes new people. Even though I have not grown up with these people or known them all of my life, they are more of my best friends with the people that have known me forever. We grew so close in such a short amount of time and honestly, not knowing everything about each other's pasts is probably for the best.
Thank you college for all of these things. Life is so much better this way and I am growing into the young adult that I have always wanted to be.
