Picture this: It's 12 o'clock on a regular Wednesday and after a long day, you're ready to call it a night. Whether you just got home from a cram session at Lib West or finally finished a season finale on Netflix, you crawl into bed and plug in your phone. But just as you start to close your eyes you hear that "BING!" You roll your eyes because you're pretty sure that text fits into one of the following categories, and you're probably right.
1. From your friend in Midtown.
I did say it was a Wednesday night, so there's no doubt Midtown is living up to its name of the facey-est place on Earth. Don't be surprised if you see something like "It's free drinks! Where are you?!" or "I can't find anyone!! Can you come get me?" and/or "OMG can we order pokey sticks when I get home?" Expect a minimum of two typos.
2. From the girl in your 9:35 a.m. class tomorrow.
If she sends you a text after midnight, it's from the middle of panic mode. "Did we have MyMathLab due tonight? I totally forgot." You both know the assignments close at midnight, so she's hoping you'll ease her freakout. It could also be something like, "Our paper is double spaced, right?" It's due in about nine hours, so if it's not, she better get cracking.
3. From the kid who got your number at a party last weekend.
This one's short and sweet: "Hey you up?" Obviously he really likes your personality and wants to get to know you better! That's why he texted you after midnight and not during daylight hours. If the text is followed by a "come over," I'm sure he just really wants to hear all about your study abroad trip last summer.
4. From your roommate.
If you are my roommate, the text probably says "Are you home? I totally forgot my keys (again)." See also "Are you home? Ugh my night sucked can we watch a movie?" Or, depending on the night, " Are you home? I'm on my way and I'm not alone. Can you not be home?"
5. From your Mom.
The cutest of the texts you get after midnight, this is probably something along the lines of "I miss you! Can't wait to see you in 17 days. XOXO." It could also be a "Are you home safe" or "Did you finish your paper?" Knowing her, it might just be a viral cat video that one of her friends posted on Facebook. Clearly that's a pressing issue and she just couldn't wait until tomorrow to show you!
