If you are wanting an escape from your current reality, or you want to learn new perspectives and ways to your own personal growth, shopping your local bookstore (or Amazon if you are currently implementing social distancing) to pick up a book is a great outlet. Summer tends to bring about more travel, a lot more free time, and in the case of this summers circumstances, maybe even boredom. Whether non-fiction or fiction is your cup of tea, disconnection from technology and immersing your mind into literature provides entertainment and educational opportunities.

To kick start your summer reading list, I have selected five summer must reads that range from riveting love affairs, long overdue self-reflecting, and even educational accounts of peoples real life stories. So, enough talking and more reading, starting with this brief overview below!

Girl, Wash Your Face

Written by Rachel Hollis, Girl, Wash Your Face is an empowering and equally inspirational book geared towards helping women make it in a mans world. By taking readers through the many lies they might encounter in life, Hollis debunks every one of them to exemplify the true potential all women have. She even adds a fun twist to this self-help read by including some of her own personal stories!

Party of Two

Some say to never mix work and pleasure and in the Party of Two we see exactly why. This read is a all about a secret love affair between a lawyer and politician. After being kept a secret for so long, the truth about their relationship goes public leaving them facing their own challenges and touch decisions.

Sex and Vanity

Most of us have read, seen, or at least heard of the great book and film hit, Crazy Rich Asians. Well, amazing author Kevin Kwan has done it again! This summer his latest book Sex and Vanity is supposed to hit the shelves and the word is we won't want to miss it. Bringing a modern love story to us, this book is the internal battle of a young woman and the two very different cultures she was raised with when faced with two great men to love. Will she go back to her past, or will she move on with her future despite what her heart is telling her?

Memorial Drive: A Daughter's Memoir

This memoir tells the story of Natasha Trethewey and her childhood traumas. She focus a great deal on looking back to analyze her home life prior to the murder of her mother by the hands of her stepfather. Trethewey takes us on a journey to understand serious societal issues people still face today such as abuse and racism through her own life experiences.

LusterĀ

If you are looking for a humorous escape this summer, Luster might just be the ticket. Author Raven Leilani writes about a young woman in a love affair with a married man whom she later on moves in with along with his family. Surprisingly, everyone is in agreeance and on good terms in the beginning, but once the young woman, Edie, gets closer to their teenage daughter while also discovering herself, things begin to get rocky.

For as long as I can remember, I have been listening to The Beatles. Every year, my mom would appropriately blast ā€œBirthdayā€ on anyoneā€™s birthday. I knew all of the words to ā€œBack In The U.S.S.Rā€ by the time I was 5 (Even though I had no idea what or where the U.S.S.R was). I grew up with John, Paul, George, and Ringo instead Justin, JC, Joey, Chris and Lance (I had to google N*SYNC to remember their names). The highlight of my short life was Paul McCartney in concert twice. Iā€™m not someone to ā€œfangirlā€ but those days I fangirled hard. The music of The Beatles has gotten me through everything. Their songs have brought me more joy, peace, and comfort. I can listen to them in any situation and find what I need. Here are the best lyrics from The Beatles for every and any occasion.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.
