Five Stages Of Going Back To College

It's the moment we've all been waiting for - until we actually have to do work.

Five Stages Of Going Back To College

Whether you're returning for your second year or your last, pretty much all college kids can relate to the stir-crazy feeling you get when you're so close to going back to school! If you're like me and happen to go to St. John Fisher College where summer is four months long, you probably feel this even more! Don't get me wrong, I absolutely love my school and my long summers, but after month three I'm itching to get back to school and my friends! But let's face it, it goes in stages and as we get back to the groove we all tend to realize how good we had it back home. So here are the five stages we all go through when going back to college for another year of shenanigans;

Stage 1: Pure Exhilaration

That first weekend back with the crew, and you just know it's going down. Every off campus house is having something, and for incoming sophomores, we're no longer the babies on campus (aka the first ones kicked out of the overcrowded house party).

Stage 2: FREE AGAIN!!

When you're at school, you make all your own decisions and your own rules. Pretty much, you feel like the adult everyone expects you to be. This is especially refreshing after being back under your parents roof for the summer and going head to head with them over, well, pretty much everything.

Stage 3: Where'd all my money go?

We can all relate to this. No matter your school, whether you're a resident or commuter, boy or girl, tall or short- by week two you're eating ramen and calling home for money. We all get to school with those summer tips and full wallets, but after feeling like you're rolling in it for a solid week, you are rolling in only one thing; debt.

Stage 4: Dining Hall food? I'll pass.

Although Fisher has arguably one of THE best dining halls (thanks Lackmann), we all inevitably get sick of our dining hall's food. This is when we start calling home begging for a those home cooked meals we took for granted all summer.

Stage 5: Homework? Tests? Projects? OH MY.

So by now you're almost to midterms and you're feeling the stress for sure. All nighters are daily, you no longer have a social life and all you want is to be in your bed, but what is sleep anyway? Only a few more weeks to make it out of the semester. Who's really counting though?

Taylor Swift in orange dress playing a moss-covered piano on stage with bright lights.

A three-and-a-half-hour runtime. Nine Eras. Eleven outfit changes. Three surprise songs. Zero breaks. One unforgettable evening. In the past century, no other performer has put on an electric performance quite like Taylor Swift, surpassing her fans ‘wildest dreams’. It is the reason supporters keep coming back to her shows each year. Days later, I’m still in awe of the spectacle ‘Miss Americana’ puts on every few days in a new city. And, like one of Taylor’s exes, has me smiling as I reminisce about the memories of the night we spent together.

"Make sure to get involved when you're in college!"

We've all heard some variation of this phrase, whether it came from parents, other family members, friends, RAs, or college-related articles. And, like many clichés, it's true for the most part. Getting involved during your college years can help you make friends, build your resume, and feel connected to your campus. However, these commitments can get stressful if you're dealing with personal issues, need to work, or aren't sure how to balance classes and everything else going on during the semester.

In college, one of the essential things to have is friends. Yes, textbooks, a laptop, and other school supplies are important but friends are essential. Friends are that support system everybody needs. The more friends you have the better the support system you have. But you also have someone to share experiences with. And don’t settle for just one or two friends because 8 out of 10 times they are busy and you are studying all alone. Or they have other friend groups that do not include you. Don’t settle for just one or two friends; make as many friends as you can. After the first couple of weeks of college, most friend groups are set and you may be without friends.

For a moment your world is spinning. The phone alarm has just scared you awake and you’re flooded by daunting thoughts of the day ahead. You have three assignments due and little time to work on them because of your job. You’re running late because you’ve hit snooze one to many times after yesterday’s long hours. You dizzily reach for a hoodie, craving its comfort, and rush for a speedy exit, praying you will have time to pick up coffee. Does this sound familiar?

Finals week is upon us. It is a magical time of year during which college students everywhere flock to the library in attempt to learn a semester's worth of knowledge in only a week. For some students, it's their first time in the library all semester, maybe ever. Others have slaved away many nights under the fluorescent lights, and are slightly annoyed to find their study space being invaded by amateurs. While these newbies wander aimlessly around the first floor, hopelessly trying to find a table, the OGs of the library are already on the third floor long tables deep into their studies. Here is a few signs that you may live in the library, whether you'd like to admit it or not.
