Hammond, Louisiana is a beautiful, tiny city of around 20,000 inhabitants. Home to Southeastern University, many people take this city for granted - I know I did.

Since I was a wee child, all I wanted to do was pack up my things and move; yet I now miss Hammond with every fiber of my being. Since moving, I have come to appreciate the city I left behind; no matter how tiny it is.

1. People are constantly confusing Hammond with Ponchatoula

People are constantly getting these two cities confused. I can not tell you how many times I have explained to someone that yes, Ponchatoula is very close to Hammond; but it is not Hammond. It doesn't help that these two cities overlap greatly, if you're driving for two minutes you may just find yourself in the middle of Ponchatoula.

Speaking of Hammond and Ponchatoula...

2. You are stuck in a constant rivalry with Ponchatoula High

No matter where you go in Ponchatoula, it's like there is always someone willing to discuss the disappointment of Hammond High. It's an age old rivalry that stems back to years before I was born, but it is old and tired. My favorite is when people talk about the lackluster education Hammond High Magnet produces, yet in the past years we've become a certified IB world school. Not to mention the students at Hammond High are going on to do great things in and out of state.

3. You find yourself at the mall way more than needed

Due to the tiny town and frequent boredom, Target and Charming Charlie's become your home. There's nothing like enjoying the cool air conditioning of Target on a hot summer's day. Anytime you're left with nothing to do it's like you can hear the sweet roar of Target's automatic doors calling out to you.

4. You are immensely proud of the SELU Lions

Anytime I am in Hammond during baseball season, I always find myself at SELU's games. What started as a bonding experience between my father and I has become one of my favorite hobbies.

No matter the sporting event, there is never a lack of fans, both young and old, cheering on their hometown heroes.

5. You're never alone

Because Hammond is so tiny, you are constantly running into familiar faces. From walking into the supermarket to going to the bank, you'll always find someone you know.

Hate it or love it, Hammond will always be a city full of friendship and strength. Although sometimes overbearing, the city is full of interesting culture and history. Whether you find yourself in another city or state, Hammond will always be apart of your heart.

For as long as I can remember, I have been listening to The Beatles. Every year, my mom would appropriately blast “Birthday” on anyone’s birthday. I knew all of the words to “Back In The U.S.S.R” by the time I was 5 (Even though I had no idea what or where the U.S.S.R was). I grew up with John, Paul, George, and Ringo instead Justin, JC, Joey, Chris and Lance (I had to google N*SYNC to remember their names). The highlight of my short life was Paul McCartney in concert twice. I’m not someone to “fangirl” but those days I fangirled hard. The music of The Beatles has gotten me through everything. Their songs have brought me more joy, peace, and comfort. I can listen to them in any situation and find what I need. Here are the best lyrics from The Beatles for every and any occasion.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.
