Doesn't it feel like every time you log into Netflix you spend more time looking for a good movie to watch rather than actually watching anything? If you answered yes, then you are in the right place. Personally, I've spent so much time on Netflix that I feel like I have seen all of the movies that spark my interest. Sometimes it's not the new movies that end up being good, but instead it's the ones that you've never heard about. I don't know about you, but I am basically always in the mood to watch a romantic movie. If you are ever feeling stuck and in the mood for love, here are my top five favorite romantic independent movies on Netflix.
1. "Short Term 12"
If you thought that Brie Larson's performance as Ma in "Room" was riveting, then you won't be surprised to find out that it wasn't her first leading role in a film. Larson stars in "Short Term 12" (2013) as the thoughtful, yet tough supervisor, Grace, at a fostercare facility for at-risk teenagers. The story follows Grace as she tries to navigate her future with her longtime boyfriend Mason (John Gallagher Jr.) while also dealing with her painful past as a formerly troubled teen. Throughout the film, we find Grace fighting to stay strong to serve as a guide for these kids, but slowly letting her guard down as she begins to figure her life out. Larson portrays the character beautifully. Director Destin Daniel Cretton based "Short Term 12" partly on his own experiences working at such a center, and previously made a short film on the subject in 2008. In 2013, his feature-length version of "Short Term 12" won the Grand Jury award and the Audience award at SXSW Film Festival. This film is truly one of those hidden gems on Netflix that actually taught me a thing or two in the least cliched way possible.
2. "In Your Eyes"
In "In Your Eyes," Rebecca (Zoe Kazan) leads a fake and boring life in New Hampshire, stuck in a loveless marriage. Across the country in New Mexico, Dylan (Michael Stahl-David) is just released from jail and desperately trying to find his way. After a series of unexplained events and visions, the two strangers discover they can see and feel whatever the other is experiencing. That leads them to conclude that they belong together. While this film doesn't achieve any great cinematic feats, Kazan and Stahl-David provide compelling performances that tug at your heart strings and make you cheer them on in their journey to meet one another in person. Scripted by Joss Whedon and directed by Brin Hill, "In Your Eyes" premiered at the Tribeca Film Festival in 2014 and was sent straight to download. For a film that was made on such a small budget, it allows the audience to believe that maybe, just maybe, "the one" might be somewhere out there waiting for you.
3. "Stuck In Love"
With a star-studded cast like this, how could you not watch "Stuck In Love"? Greg Kinnear plays Bill Borgens, a writer who's lost his connection with his daughter Samantha (Lily Collins) and his son Rusty (Nat Wolff) after his divorce from their mother. As Bill patiently but desperately holds onto the hope that his wife Erica (Jennifer Connelly) will come back, his kids deal with love and all of its complexities. Samantha is left with bitter and cynical thoughts about love and relationships after the divorce but then finds herself falling for the innocent Louis (Logan Lerman). Her brother Rusty, on the other hand, decides to live a life worth writing about and gets into a very serious relationship with his high school crush, Kate (Liana Liberato). Director Josh Boone intertwines this family's love lives so beautifully despite all of the bad things that happen. Not only does this movie always inspire me to write, but it gives me hope that there is love out there for everyone.
4. "6 Years"
I watched this film a few months ago when it first came out on Netflix, and the first thing it reminded me of was the movie "Like Crazy" directed by Drake Doremus, sadly not on Netflix anymore. Melanie (Taissa Farmiga) and Dan (Ben Rosenfield) are a young couple with big plans for their future together. When unexpected opportunities arise, they are sent into a downward spiral, threatening their relationship. The first thing about Hannah Fidell's film that I noticed was the incredibly natural chemistry between Melanie and Dan. Both Taissa and Ben are promising young actors with raw talent. Although it can be a little melodramatic at times, sometimes it is nice to watch a film that isn't exactly like real life. If you watch this film and are not full-out sobbing by the end of it, then you probably weren't watching the right movie.
5. "Beyond the Lights"
There is always room in your life for a romantic movie that also includes singing. Always. This movie is undoubtedly one of the best movies of 2014. "Beyond the Lights" highlights Noni (Gugu Mbatha-Raw), an international pop singer, who has had enough of the pressure that fame has brought her. She decides she wants to end it all until Kaz (Nate Parker) steps in. Kaz is a young cop that eventually becomes Noni's bodyguard. As they begin to fall in love, he challenges her to be the artist that she has always wanted to be and to break free of other people's expectations for her. Besides Noni's beautiful singing, this movie has so much to offer. It reminds us to never forget who we truly are.
