Five Reasons Why I Think 'Jane The Virgin' Is Worth Watching

Have you finished Breaking Bad, House of Cards, or whatever popular Netflix series you were binge watching? Have no fear—Jane the Virgin is here to put a temporary hold on your never-ending crisis of “What do I watch now?” Here are five reasons why I think you should give this sweet, innocent, pregnant virgin a shot. (And yes, you read that correctly—a pregnant virgin).

1. Jane’s “perfect” life is turned upside down in Episode 1, which will leave you hooked.

Jane Villanueva seems to have it all—she’s young, smart, pretty, and is on her way to becoming a teacher. She lives with her loving mother, Xiomara, and a super religious, yet wise and caring grandmother, Alba. She also has a detective boyfriend named Michael, but that all changes when her Pap Smear appointment accidentally turns into an artificial insemination, resulting in Jane becoming pregnant. Not only pregnant, but a pregnant virgin! Needless to say, that causes a ton of friction with Jane’s boyfriend. Everything goes downhill from there.

2. You will fall in love with the (hysterical) characters.

Some of my favorites include telonovela star, and Jane’s dad, Rogelio, whose self-centeredness usually leads him down the wrong path. There’s also Petra, a hotel owner’s ex-wife, and main antagonist of the show, whose menacing yet funny antics often come back to haunt her as the show progresses. Don’t even get me started on the Narrator. His narration and descriptions in that deep Latino voice are bound to have you rolling on the floor.

3. It’s your perfect soap opera, complete with plot twists and cliffhangers.

Aside from Jane’s “immaculate conception” there are several other side stories that unfold throughout the series, like when Petra’s dark past is revealed, or the never-ending mystery as to who Sin Rostro is, and where he or she is hiding, or Jane’s budding relationship with her biological father that she just met—just to name a few.

4. Justin Baldoni.

Ok, this reason may sound a little silly, especially to the men. But, Justin Baldoni… AM I RIGHT, LADIES? There is no denying that he is gorgeous. Especially that one scene where he is on the beach, with no shirt on. (Ok, I’m just going to stop right there, I think you all get the idea…)

5. It shows the relationship a mother and daughter should have.

I think the main reason why Jane the Virgin is worth watching is because of Xiomara and Jane’s relationship. Xiomara ran a bit “wild” in her teen years, resulting in her having Jane at only 16 years old. Regardless of her mistake, she raised Jane as a single parent, and loved her with all of her heart, doing everything she could to protect her daughter. Xiomara’s love for Jane resulted in a wonderful mother-daughter bond where not only does Xiomara provide Jane motherly care and advice, but she is also there for Jane like a best friend. Rather than turning her back on Jane during a difficult time period, Xiomara supported Jane, and helped her throughout her pregnancy journey. Showing such love and support is something all mothers should do for their daughters, no matter the situation—and Xiomara and Jane are the perfect example.

Now that I’ve explained why I believe that you should give Jane the Virgin a chance, I’m going to go make popcorn and finish binge-watching season 1 on Netflix while drooling over Justin Baldoni’s abs.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

These powerful lyrics remind us how much good is inside each of us and that sometimes we are too blinded by our imperfections to see the other side of the coin, to see all of that good.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

The song was sent to me late in the middle of the night. I was still awake enough to plug in my headphones and listen to it immediately. I always did this when my best friend sent me songs, never wasting a moment. She had sent a message with this one too, telling me it reminded her so much of both of us and what we have each been through in the past couple of months.

Zodiac wheel with signs and symbols surrounding a central sun against a starry sky.

What's your sign? It's one of the first questions some of us are asked when approached by someone in a bar, at a party or even when having lunch with some of our friends. Astrology, for centuries, has been one of the largest phenomenons out there. There's a reason why many magazines and newspapers have a horoscope page, and there's also a reason why almost every bookstore or library has a section dedicated completely to astrology. Many of us could just be curious about why some of us act differently than others and whom we will get along with best, and others may just want to see if their sign does, in fact, match their personality.

Being a good person does not depend on your religion or status in life, your race or skin color, political views or culture. It depends on how good you treat others.

We are all born to do something great. Whether that be to grow up and become a doctor and save the lives of thousands of people, run a marathon, win the Noble Peace Prize, or be the greatest mother or father for your own future children one day. Regardless, we are all born with a purpose. But in between birth and death lies a path that life paves for us; a path that we must fill with something that gives our lives meaning.
