Odyssey - Friends, Foes, Fraternizing

Okay, lets be really honest with one another. The first semester away from home is probably going to be your hardest. College differs a lot from high school. It's a new environment, new teachers, new rules (or lack there of), and new people. But don't fret, you'll meet lots of great ones. Here's five different types of people you'll meet that will change your life.

1.) The Mom Friend

Okay, yes you had a mom friend in high school but this is different. You meet someone new and learn that you can trust them with your life and ask them for advice on more serious things. This person will help you figure out who you are.

2.) The Party Friend

Yeah it's your first semester of college so maybe you'll get to go to your first college party. You'll get invited by this friend and they'll laugh at you when you're too drunk and help you find the bread in the kitchen so your hangover isn't awful. But they're more than a party friend, they're the one you go to when you want advice about what to wear or what to do about a paper being overdue because you may have partied too much.

3.) The Boy Friend

Emphasis on friend. This is the guy you'll confide you boy troubles in. He'll help you out when times are rough and he can give you the best advice on what to do when the guy you think is Mr. Right is acting like Mr. Wrong or actually turns out to be Mr. Wrong and they'll probably send some memes to help you cheer up.

4.) The Political Friend

Okay, this is going to be one of the better friends to have. They'll keep you up to date on so many political issues for all your current event tests and make sure you have a full understanding of a certain issue in the press today. They're going to help you out when it comes to picking a topic for your opinion paper and making sure that you stay unbiased through the whole thing

And finally...

5.) The Mechanic Friend

If you live on campus or commute, they're the best. They help you if you need an oil change or if you need your car jumped, but if you're me you'll fall in love with them and they become your best friend.

There are so many great people surrounding you and so many others that you'll meet. Don't worry about making friends, you will definitely find the ones that make you're college experience worthwhile.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.
