Fit State: Penn State's New IM Building

Penn State is featured in a plethora of Top Ten lists on the Internet. From being the most fun university, having the best student section for football games and being one of the prettiest campuses, you could say PSU is impressive. But did you know that we are one of the healthiest college campuses in the nation? With top-ten-worthy gym facilities, Penn State students are among the fittest.

Penn State offers students many options for workouts and workout equipment. Conveniently located in different parts of campus, one of each of the four fully equipped facilities is always within reach for Penn State students. The facilities have a great selection of equipment for cardio, weightlifting and muscle toning. Student memberships only cost $60 per semester, including access to all the fitness centers and the group fitness classes. Compared to standard gym membership rates, this is quite the steal. The White Building, Rec Hall and the newly-renovated Intramural building have scheduled fitness classes for Penn State fitness members daily.

These fitness classes range from dance fitness to muscle conditioning. Some campus favorites include Boot Camp, Power Remix and Calorie Killer. All these classes provide patrons with a 45-60 minute workout every week created by our campus’ very own team of fitness instructors. Penn State Fitness finds their new home in the IM building, now offering 36 classes weekly.

Upon entering the IM building, you are asked to present your student ID for a state-of-the-art check-in system. Be sure to remember that this method of access is how you enter all of the facilities, including the basketball courts for pickup games. The classes at IM are similar to the multitude of classes available at White Building, Penn State Fitness’ home base. A new cycling studio and mind-body studio are located downstairs at IM. This mind-body studio, located in the large mirrored room, has added Pilates balls and other props to bring variety to the planned workouts.

Students should be taking advantage of this gym, especially if they are sick of those White Building lines. Live off campus? Jump on the Loop and get off at East or the IM stop. There are no lines and people are just starting to discover how much this building's expansion has to offer. At this rate, we could become the healthiest college in the nation. Way to stay fit, State.

For as long as I can remember, I have been listening to The Beatles. Every year, my mom would appropriately blast “Birthday” on anyone’s birthday. I knew all of the words to “Back In The U.S.S.R” by the time I was 5 (Even though I had no idea what or where the U.S.S.R was). I grew up with John, Paul, George, and Ringo instead Justin, JC, Joey, Chris and Lance (I had to google N*SYNC to remember their names). The highlight of my short life was Paul McCartney in concert twice. I’m not someone to “fangirl” but those days I fangirled hard. The music of The Beatles has gotten me through everything. Their songs have brought me more joy, peace, and comfort. I can listen to them in any situation and find what I need. Here are the best lyrics from The Beatles for every and any occasion.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.
