Leaving home and living as an "adult" in college is a huge step for most families. I know that my family and I had that struggle as I decided to attend a school located about five hours from our home. College is a time for growth and learning as much about yourself as about your field of study. Here are some tips on how to get through that first week of adjustment to living in a residence hall.

1. Call your mother.

This may seem obvious to some, but to others they need a constant reminder that they probably are not entirely on their own! Calling home to your family is probably the best way to get everyone involved with you moving away from home starting to realize that you are okay on your own.

2. Go to all the Cheesy Welcome Week events.

Believe it or not, the events that the university puts on can be very fun and entertaining to attend. The best part of the university events are free food and prizes. This can range from a university T-shirt to a flat screen television -- yes, I am still waiting on a tuition waver as a prize to be given out!

3. Go to class.

This may seem like a given or rather strange, but believe it or not, you will become friends with people in your classes, especially your harder classes. You will form study groups, go to dinner and the library for test prep, or maybe even cry with one another after the exam... personal experience.

4. Talk to your Resident Assistant.

Your resident assistant or RA are there to help you along the path of finding yourself and making sure that your do it in a safe manner. RAs and ResLife staff are trained to help someone find their spot in life, and it may very well be by telling them to knock on their neighbors door and say hello.

5. Be Prepared to do something on your own.

My biggest fear about going to a school where I basically did not know anyone was doing something alone. However, I have gotten used to the occasional lunch or dinner date by myself. It is actually really relaxing to decompress and sit and just go over your homework.

All in all, college is a huge transition. Living on campus, in a residence hall is the first step to adulting fully. Being on your own truly makes you think of life in a different way.

For as long as I can remember, I have been listening to The Beatles. Every year, my mom would appropriately blast “Birthday” on anyone’s birthday. I knew all of the words to “Back In The U.S.S.R” by the time I was 5 (Even though I had no idea what or where the U.S.S.R was). I grew up with John, Paul, George, and Ringo instead Justin, JC, Joey, Chris and Lance (I had to google N*SYNC to remember their names). The highlight of my short life was Paul McCartney in concert twice. I’m not someone to “fangirl” but those days I fangirled hard. The music of The Beatles has gotten me through everything. Their songs have brought me more joy, peace, and comfort. I can listen to them in any situation and find what I need. Here are the best lyrics from The Beatles for every and any occasion.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.
