Brace for impact. Spring break is over. The vacation you've been counting down to since winter break ended has come and gone in a blur of sleeping-in-till-afternoons and refusing to acknowledge the fact that this special week shares the same number of hours as the ones you spend in class. But, whether you spent your heavenly holiday on a beach in Cabo or happily back at home, the bell has rung and class is back in session. In the wake of this tragic event, we turn to nation's most fabulous fixer, Olivia Pope, for pointers on how to "handle it."
1. When you experience the jarring sensation of sitting down in your first post-break class
Remarkably, your body adjusted itself into Spring Break mode faster than Olivia can down a bottle of red wine. This quick assimilation makes the heartbreaking return to a structured schedule all the more difficult to bear as you exchange a week of fun for the vaguely familiar squeaky desk in the third row.
2. When you're telling your friends your best spring break story
The first week back from break involves a lot of story-exchange. Sometimes you're the dutiful, potentially jealous listener, who has to hear the girl who sits next to you in Humanities talk about how the South of France isn't quite as warm as it normally is this time of year. But, when it's your moment to tell your spotlight tales, don't let anyone get in your way.
3. When you re-enact the best moments of break with your squad
Whether you ended up on a beach with your best friends, abroad on an exotic adventure or home to remember why you went to school so far away in the first place, half the fun of telling someone about your break is reliving it's highlight reel memories, even if they don't do the story proper justice. You just had to be there.
4. When you bring your spring break sass back to school
Vacation is prime-time for perfecting your best-you. Done through copious amounts of relaxation, your mother's home cooking or the thrill of a new and unfamiliar experience, Spring Break gifts everyone with a little bit of change for the return-trip back to campus. Not quite as extreme as New Year's "you," spring-break-Superstar "you" is riding a holiday high that even the most ridiculous reading assignment couldn't kill.
5. When you see your midterm grade for the first time
Sure, you know you probably could have studied a teensy bit more, but this moment of profound and terrible clarity highlights that you were in spring break mode long before your last class let out. Or that's the excuse you'll give your parents.
6. When your post-break grade reminds you how hard you have to work the rest of the semester
The first half of the semester wasn't necessarily a walk in the park, but the reality of the post-break slump and looming (albeit distantly) finals is the kick-in-the-pants you need to bunker down and protect your golden GPA.
7. When you fall back into pre-break habits too quickly
Sure, the "you" that was prepping for wearing a swimsuit in Cabo or mission-tripping in Fiji was a gym-going, chicken-breast-ordering machine, but without the vacation motivation, you are happily back to Netflix in bed and french fries for lunch.
8. When someone reminds you how far away summer vacation is
Now that the vacation you've been counting down to since January has passed, it's time to move on to the next holiday milestone: summer vacation. Your countdown is prepped and your calendar dates are circled. You talk about vacation's distance in months (because the double-digit day statistic is too daunting) and refuse to let anyone kill your tunnel vision pursuit of your next break.
9. On Friday, when you realize it's almost the weekend (i.e. mini-spring-break)
After a long week of aging a real person again, the prospect of a class-free Saturday feels almost as good as the first Monday of spring break. The recent break has instilled in a you an aggressive love for days off, and you pledge to never take a work-free weekend for granted again.
10. When you remember all the good times you had over break
From simple moments of peace away from your studies to wild nights spent with friends, spring break is the reward you get for making it (almost) 3/4 of the school year without giving up. And, in the tough transitionary moments back to the reality of school and work, it's easy to escape back to your holiday happy place.
11. When you survive the first week back unscathed
Congratulations! Against the tantalizing pull of vacation memories and fond, but sweet, recollection of sleeping in, you have somehow managed the difficult transition back from spring break-er to semi-real-world-adult. Olivia would be proud.
