Let’s talk about my first time… making sushi, that is. I was craving sushi, hardcore, for over a month, so I went on Pinterest. Normally I’m just pinning outfits I wish I had, new workout tips or adorable animals. However, this time I decided to look for an easy sushi recipe I could follow. I actually ended up finding a few. I then put my knowledge and curiosity to work. I was eager to create a platter of California rolls. I combined a few recipes and came up with the directions and pictures below.
1. I was able to find all the supplies at Cub Foods for around $30. You will need rice, seaweed-sheets, crab (I’m using imitation crab), celery and avocados.
2. Start by making the rice. I followed the recipe on the back of the box/bag. I used two cups of rice. After the rice is cooked it needs to be “seasoned” with sugar (1 1/2 Tbsp) and rice vinegar (2 tbsp) and lastly, a dash of salt.
3. While the rice is “marinating” and cooking, you can start chopping up your celery, avocado and crab. You’ll want the pieces to be about half the length of your seaweed sheet.
4. Then move onto to the seaweed sheet. Be careful not to rip it as you’re taking it out of the packaging (I did). I placed a towel down first to help with rolling (you don’t have to, however), then plastic wrap, then the seaweed sheet.
5. Place a healthy amount of rice on the sheet and spread evenly. I used a spoon to counteract the stickiness.
6. Then place your ingredients close to one side of the seaweed sheet: that’s the side you start to roll on.
7. Now, you’ll roll. It’s messy, but that’s another reason why we have the towel. Make the roll tight enough that nothing falls out, but not so tight that the seaweed rips.
8. Once you have your rolls all rolled out, cut them with a sharp knife about 1/2 an inch thick.
9. Lastly eat and enjoy!
For my first time making sushi, it turned out pretty well; I was very proud. No sickness, no accidental cutting and no dropping anything on the floor. They were, however, a bit dry and slightly bland; that’ll have to be fixed for next time. Maybe adding a sauce will help. I hope you have as much fun making sushi as I did.
