Only one month in and yet so much to say! When you think about it, 30 days is a long time to be away from home and yet if you’re anything like me, your first month of college has flown by. It’s been full of new experiences, new food, new people and so much more. And odds are you’ve probably had family and friends asking you what you’ve been up to while you’re gone. So if you're one of those people wondering what the first month of college has been like, what better way to describe it than through a bunch of your favorite songs?
1. When you realize just how much sh*t you’re bringing with you…
Irreplaceable by: Beyoncé
“To the left, to the left/ Everything you own in the box to the left/ In the closet that's my stuff, yes”
It’s the few weeks leading up to move-in day and you’re so excited to decorate your new room and get moved in. So naturally you pack a few things you need, and about a million things that you don’t need, and cram it into the back of your minivan. Which of course is followed by a barrage of comments about how you don’t need to bring all of that with you. (We know… but we MIGHT need it. In which case we’ll be sure to let you know you were wrong).
2. Move-in day!
Don't Forget to Remember Me by: Carrie Underwood
"We were loading up that Chevy/ Both tryin' not to cry/ Momma kept on talking/ Putting off good-bye/ Then she took my hand and said/ 'Baby don't forget to remember me"
Goodbye to your parents, your friends, your mom’s way underappreciated home-cooked meals, and the saddest goodbye of all--your dog. Tears are shed (though you might not admit it), mental pictures of the place you love so much are taken, and “last hoorahs” with your best friends are executed (hopefully without flaw and legal intervention). Whether you’re moving across the country, or 30 minutes down the road, you’re sad to leave, but beyond excited to start your new adventure.
3. When your roommate wakes you up with just enough time to get to the class you were about to sleep through…
Beautiful Soul by: Jesse McCartney
"I don't want another pretty face/ I don't want just anyone to hold/ I don't want my love to go to waste/ I want you and your beautiful soul"
Dear roommate who saves you from missing your class: you are the best kind of person. Yes, now I have to sprint to class with bed head and two different shoes on, but at least I made it. There is a special place in heaven for you.
4. When your mom finds out you failed your first exam...
Sorry by: Justin Bieber
"You gotta go and get angry at all of my honesty/ You know I try but I don't do too well with apologies/ I hope I don't run out of time. Could someone call a referee?/ 'Cause I just need one more shot at forgiveness"
Well… it was bound to happen eventually right? Who knew it was going to happen within the first month of classes but what can you say? Sorry Mom!
5. When you realize “want to split an uber with me?” has become part of your everyday vocabulary...
Uber Everywhere by: MadeInTYO
I think you can guess how this one goes...
A beacon of light comes shining down the street and you know your night is about to get a whole lot better. Suddenly the most beautiful sight you’ve ever seen comes into vision: the black Toyota. It’s 2 in the morning and this Uber is about to save you from that dreaded, (but totally reasonable), walk back to campus, which you really didn’t feel like making. One month in and you’ve already spent an unnecessary amount of money on Ubers, but at least you didn’t spend it on food this time right?
6. When you finish your last class on Friday...
Cheers (Drink to That) by: Rihanna
"Got my Ray-Bans on and I'm feelin' hella cool tonight, yeah/ Everybody's vibin' so don't nobody start a fight, yeah-ah-ah-ah/ Cheers to the freakin' weekend"
Cheers.
To. The. Freaking. Weekend. Friday is finally here and you couldn’t be happier.
You should probably just stay in and catch up on all of the sleep that you told
yourself you would get during the week, but then again FOMO is real so what the
heck. Strap on your converse and put away the books, because it’s gonna be a
good night!
7. When it's finally Friday night...
Too F****d Up to Call by: 2AM Club
"You told me to call you by 1/ But I wasn't thinking/ I was just out with my friends, talking and drinking/ We've been through this a hundred times/ You say I don't care at all/ But baby I love you, I'm just too f****d up to call"
You’re
standing in the middle of a frat basement when it hits you that you forgot to
call your sister, and you forgot to lock your door, and you have a chemistry
exam on Tuesday and a million other things but you’re not really in the right
mind to worry about right now. Oops, best to just worry about it tomorrow!
8. Game day!
Parking Lot Party by: Lee Brice
"At the parking lot party/ Tailgate buzz just sipping' on suds/ Ain't never too early/ To light one up, fill up your cup/ Cause there ain't no party like the pre-party/ And after the party the after-party/ At the parking lot party"
Tailgate
season! If you go to a southern school that most likely means throwing on your
black dress and cowboy boots and heading to the stadium. But regardless of
where you are, tailgates are arguably the most fun part of the game. Good
music, good friends, and (decently) good football, what more could you want?
9. Sunday...
Really Really by: Kevin Gates
"Diamonds really diamonds/ And I'm shining bright 'cause I'm really grinding/ They ask me if I'm real/ I say is you serious?"
After a full weekend of frat parties and tailgates, it’s time to do all that homework you put off. I can’t even count the amount of times on a Sunday that I’ve heard “you want to go to the library and grind?” or “I’m grinding in the library all day today.” Yes, college is partially about having fun, but at the end of the day everybody cares about their grades too. So Saturdays are for fun and Sundays are for homework.
10. When suddenly it’s Sunday night at 11 p.m. and you realize just how much homework you put off…
Stressed Out by: 21 Pilots
"Wish we could turn back time (oh), to the good ol' days (oh),/ When our momma sang us to sleep but now we're stressed out./ We're stressed out."
“Sundays are for homework” is a great motto until you’ve been sitting in the library chugging coffee for 12 hours and realize Friday and Saturday probably should have been for homework too. All you can do now is keep the caffeine coming and tell yourself you won’t do this next week (which let’s be honest, you probably will).
11. When you DON'T fail your second exam...
The Man by: Aloe Blacc
"You can tell everybody/ Yeah you can tell everybody/ Go ahead and tell everybody/ I'm the man, I'm the man, I'm the man"
Nothing feels better than the moment when you get to walk (no, strut) out of class knowing all your studying payed off and you might not have to drop out on account of stupidity before the first semester is even over. You’re basically a certified genius and the school should honestly just hand you your diploma right now.
12. When you’re wondering how you spent so much money that you didn’t really have to begin with...
$ave Dat Money by: Lil Dicky
"Ay, where the gold at, baby?/ Ay, where the clothes at, baby?/ Ay, where the dough at, baby?/ In the bank but you know I ain't tryna blow that, baby/ Ay, we gon' save that money"
Everybody makes jokes about broke college kids not having money but you really don’t understand it until you’re sitting around a table with your friends scrounging up money for Chinese food just so you don’t have to suffer through another dinner at the dining hall. Start saving now people.
13. When you live in a hall-style dorm with super friendly people...
Knock Knock by: Mac Miller
"1, 2, 3, 4 some crazy-ass kids come and knock up on your door so/ Let ‘em in, let ‘em in, let ‘em in (hey)"
Pros: lots of friends and lots of fun. Cons: zero sleep, zero food, and zero alone time. Somebody’s always doing something which is definitely both a blessing and a curse. Yes, you’ll almost never be bored, but you’ll also never have more than 7 hours of sleep in a row. Word spreads like wildfire when there’s food in the dorm, “study sessions” turn into movie nights, and there’s always somebody at the door.
14. When you realize you've found your home away from home...
I Love College by: Asher Roth
"But my good friends is all I need/ Pass out at three, wake up at 10/ Go out to eat, then do it again, man I love college…"
Don’t get me wrong, it hasn’t been all sunshine and rainbows. You’ll get homesick, you’ll hate the cafeteria food, and you’ll occasionally hate yourself for going out the night before. But at the end of the day, hopefully you’ll realize you’re in the best place with the best people, and you wouldn’t trade the first month of college for the world.
