Last week, Bre Lewis wrote Moving In: Expectations vs. Reality. She covered the things we expect versus the things that actually happen when moving in. I decided to keep going with the expectation vs. reality theme and pair it with the things that can happen the first few days of classes.
1. "Syllabus Day"
Expectation: Reading and going over the syllabus then leaving class early.
Reality: Reading and going over the syllabus then getting started on material right away.
2. Meeting new people
Expectation: Talking to the people that sit next to you in class or maybe meeting the love of your life the first day.
Reality: When someone sits beside you, you awkwardly smile and think to yourself “why did they sit right beside me?”
3. Food on campus
Expectation: Avoiding the fast food places on campus to make healthy choices.
Reality: Eating Chick-fil-A, Panda Express, and Burger Studio three times a day.
4. Navigating through campus
Expectations: Walking around campus thinking you know your way around.
Reality: Going into the wrong part of a building, end up getting lost, and being late.
5. Ratings on Ratemyprofessor.com
Expectations: Preparing for the professor to be exactly like the reviews.
Reality: The professor either being stricter or more laid back than what you anticipated.
6. First-day outfits
Expectations: People put their best foot forward by dressing up on the first day, so naturally you dress up also.
Reality: People end up wearing T-shirts and shorts to save their cute outfits for the weekend life.
7. Introducing yourself to the professor
Expectations: After introducing yourself, a week later the professor remembers your name.
Reality: A week later the professor forgets your name along with the other people that introduced themselves.
8.Textbooks
Expectations: Paying $300 for a book and expecting to use it all semester.
Reality: Paying $300 and using the book for that one assignment you have to write a paragraph on.
9. Campus involvement
Expectations: Signing up for the organizations and planning to attend meetings and events
Reality: Not ever going to the meetings, events, and marking the emails as "Junk Mail."
