Finding Your Special Thing In College

If you find something you enjoy, keep doing it.

We have all heard that college is a time of growth and to try new things, but what happens when we find that one of those new things we tried is something that we really enjoy? If something that doesn’t fit into our major and the reason we found it was just because it sounded interesting and it took care of one of those weird requirements we need to graduate.

I recently found myself in the exact same position. I found a class that was beginning level in a skill I had no need for in my major and took it because it covered my creative perspectives. I fell in the love with the class and found it was my escape away from my other classes, work, and everything else I have going on. With the class slowly coming to an end, I found myself dreading the fact that I was not able to continue it. I began considering taking the next class in this area even though it wouldn’t it do anything for my major, I just wanted to do it for fun. I kept telling myself that it was worth it and I should focus on my major classes (that I still enjoy).

It wasn’t until someone recently told me that college is about more than just your major that I started to think my initial thoughts were absurd. To really enjoy college, you should take classes that you love alongside the ones in your major. If you have a good relationship with the professor, that should encourage you to do it even more. Professionals want to see that you branched out in college and built relationships with people other than within your major. This shows that you are a well-rounded individual that is not afraid to get outside of your comfort zone. College is a unique opportunity to learn skills that you can’t learn on your own once you are in the real world. Professors design their classes so that you can master the skills that you want to gain. Not only that but if you’re like me then it can help to take the stress out of the normal college routine. This can be the one thing that you look forward to when making your schedule every semester.

“If you love something, let it go” is a phrase we hear a lot in relation to things and people we love. I am here to tell you not to let it go if you love it and to stick with it. If it becomes part of who you are, then you shouldn’t have to change it. Live you college experience how YOU want it because it is yours and no one else’s.

For as long as I can remember, I have been listening to The Beatles. Every year, my mom would appropriately blast “Birthday” on anyone’s birthday. I knew all of the words to “Back In The U.S.S.R” by the time I was 5 (Even though I had no idea what or where the U.S.S.R was). I grew up with John, Paul, George, and Ringo instead Justin, JC, Joey, Chris and Lance (I had to google N*SYNC to remember their names). The highlight of my short life was Paul McCartney in concert twice. I’m not someone to “fangirl” but those days I fangirled hard. The music of The Beatles has gotten me through everything. Their songs have brought me more joy, peace, and comfort. I can listen to them in any situation and find what I need. Here are the best lyrics from The Beatles for every and any occasion.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.
