No story can ever replace that of Nemo, Marlin, and the adventure that a father went through to find his son...at least that's what everyone told us. "Finding Nemo" was the inspiring story of family, and more specifically how no one gets left behind. Marlin crossed the ocean to find his son, and when Dory realized she too needed to find her family, she didn't let her weakest quality stop her.
Sure, "Finding Nemo" was about the quest to find Nemo, and "Finding Dory" isn't really about anyone finding Dory, but it is about Dory finding herself.
If you didn't catch it from the first movie, Dory lost her parents and when it happened, she was the cutest little thing. At least once in your life, you probably wandered off in the grocery stores and had a mental breakdown. The chances that you also suffered from short term memory loss and completely forgot who your family was is very slim. But that's what happened to Dory, and it's completely heart wrenching. She forgot the only thing that allowed her to remember. Family.
Home is where the heart is, and where there is heart there is family. Finding home is finding family, and knowing your family and friends is knowing yourself. If you've ever felt out of place, you can totally relate to Dory. Living in a world where you don't recognize, or know left from right can be so isolating. Home is somewhere that is safe and no matter where life takes you, you can always go home.
Marlin, Nemo, Dory, Charlie and Jenny are more than just friends, they're family. Family that never gave up. Family that was there in the toughest of times. Although they weren't all related, they all loved one another despite their differences. Through all of the chaos, heartbreak, and happiness, these people remained unforgettable no matter how much forgetting Dory could do. In order to remember, all she had to do was believe, and just keep swimming.
So maybe "Finding Dory" wasn't the story about Dory's timid father crossing the ocean to save his beloved child, but it was about someone finding themselves by going back to where they came from. The lesson it did teach us was that you can take someone from their home, but can't take their home from them. Dory found family and family was home.
