I believe in the power of Zen. Zen is a form of Buddhism that proclaims that enlightenment is found by the process of mediation and self-contemplation. In our society, we often experience the teachings of Zen through guided and self-mediation, yoga, positive thinking, and self-awareness. Many people find these things are important in attaining happiness, as they have witnessed their positive effects in their lives and others. However, many people have trouble making these behaviors a habit, and for a good reason.
We live in a monochronic society, meaning that we treat time as a resource that will soon be lost. Through this mentality, we fill as much of our time up with as many things as we can, so that we don’t feel as though we are wasting this precious resource. However, what is the purpose of filling up time with all these stressors, when we allow ourselves no time to actually enjoy our life? This is something that Zen works to combat. We weren’t made to live in a world of distractions, which is why the more we get distracted, the worse we feel. And, conversely, this is why Zen feels good; because we are allowing our minds and our bodies to truly be as they are meant to. But, how exactly do we incorporate this Zen lifestyle while we are already caught up in the madness of the world? I have a few pointers on how to begin.
1. Mindfulness.
You can be mindful and still be busy, so this is a good place to start. Wherever you are and whatever you’re doing, be present in that moment. Be an active listener, acknowledge your surroundings, focus on each bite of food you put in your body. Don’t fill these times playing on your phone, as you never know what you may miss.
2. Exercise.
We hear of the need of working out from a million different sources, including the media. However, I disagree with the angle of these sources. I believe that exercising for the good of your body is way more important than working out to benefit your image. When you exercise, you get back into yourself. Your mind and body align with each breath, and you work together to achieve a common goal. Exercise not only helps also provides an opportunity for you to acknowledge and love your body, which is one of the most important things you can do for yourself.
3. Healthy eating.
Part of this lifestyle is loving yourself, which starts with what you put in your body. Making sure to nourish yourself with every meal will make you feel both mentally and physically healthier.
4. Positive-thinking.
This is something that I believe we can all attest makes a huge difference in our lives, but is hard to do consistently. We are constantly thrown obstacles in our path, and overcoming these with a smile on your face 100 percent of the time seems a little far fetched. However, starting small will make a huge difference. If you find yourself in a rut of negativity, simply focus on a happier thought. Make this a habit and soon you will find that you clear out negative thoughts more and more easily.
5. Rewarding yourself.
You work hard in order to sustain the demands of your life, so reward yourself constantly. Take bubble baths. Allow yourself to read for pleasure. Eat chocolate covered strawberries and catch up on the last episode of your favorite TV show. Whatever you choose, do it guilt-free. You deserve it.
I once read a quote that really resonated with me:
“The inspiration you seek is already within you. Be silent and listen.”
With these small five things, I believe you will gain the opportunity to hear your true purpose in this life, and the ability to be inspired time and time again.
